Second-Half Drought Erases First-Half Lead in Tigers' First Loss of Season

Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Franklin outscored DePauw, 11-0, over the opening eight minutes of the second half and erased a nine-point halftime lead on the way to a 63-62 victory over the Tigers. DePauw improved to 2-1, while the Grizzlies dropped to 1-2.

DePauw led for all but 15 seconds of the first half and built as much as an 11-point lead on the way to a 37-28 halftime advantage.

Over the opening eight minutes of the second half, the Tigers missed all six field goal tries and committed eight turnovers while Franklin scored 11 straight to take a 39-37 lead. Elijah Hales' basket with 11:57 left ended the run and evened the score at 39-39.

The lead went back-and-forth for much of the next six minutes before Carter Crowe and Nathaniel Hoffman hit back-to-back threes to give Franklin a 55-50 lead with just over five minutes remaining. The Grizzlies led by as many as six at 60-54 when Cody Samples knocked in a trey with 3:23 left.

Camden Brown, Hales, Grant Niego and Ronald Johnson each scored in an 8-0 DePauw run as the Tigers gained a 62-60 lead with just over one minute remaining. 

Crowe's 3-pointer with 30 seconds left gave Franklin a 63-62 lead and the Tigers turned the ball over on their next possession. DePauw was forced to commit a couple of fouls to put Franklin into the bonus. Crowe missed the front end of a one-and-one and the Tigers grabbed the rebound. Following a timeout, Grant Niego missed a jumper and Hales' rebounded but couldn't get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

Hales led DePauw with 20 points, while Brown added 12 and a game-high nine rebounds. Grant Niego dished out four assists and Ian Hensley had three steals.

Crowe paced Franklin with 19 points and Ryan Bostic added 10, while Logan Hudgins grabbed eight rebounds. Samples and Hudgins each dished out four assists and Trey Flatt had three steals.

DePauw shot 46.9 percent from the field to Franklin's 42.4 percent, but the Grizzlies shot 51.9 percent in the second half. The Tigers held a 36-28 advantage on the boards.

DePauw faces Westminster (Mo.) on Friday, November 18, in a 6 p.m. CST game at Webster University.
