Gambier, Ohio - In its final road game of the season, DePauw jumped out to a 21-0 lead on the way to a 58-35 North Coast Athletic Conference win at Kenyon. The Tigers improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the NCAC, while the Owls dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
The teams exchanged punts to start the game before DePauw put together an 8-play, 43-yard drive that culminated in
Nathan McCahill's 6-yard scoring pass to
Gabe Quigley.
Kenyon then drove to the DePauw 7, but the Tigers' defense stopped the Owls on downs and the offense embarked on a 9-play, 93-yard series that ended with
Trey Shaw scoring on a 4-yard run.
DePauw extended the lead to 21-0 midway through the second as McCahill connected with Quigley for a 20-yard score, but the Owls came right back with a 75-yard pass play from Ryan O'Leary to Zachary Kim on the second play of the drive.
The Tigers came up empty on their next possession as
Joseph Sullivan's 38-yard field goal was blocked. Kenyon needed just three plays to reach paydirt as O'Leary and Kim teamed for a 77-yard score. to make it 21-14 with 1:34 left in the half.
DePauw started the ensuing series near midfield and tacked on another score as McCahill found
Robby Ballentine for an 18-yard score on the third play of the drive and with 47 seconds remaining in the half.
The Tigers extended the lead to 52-14 with scores on each of the first four drives of the second half.
Gus Baumgartner scored on a 13-yard run and Shaw scored on a 50-yard pass from McCahill to make it 42-14. Shaw scored on a 1-yard run before
Jack Drake booted a 44-yard field goal with 1:42 left in the third.
Early in the fourth, Kenyon's Jordon Benjamin scored on a 25-yard run and, following an interception, the Owls cut the lead to 52-28 as O'Leary and Kim teamed for a 56-yard score.
Collin Knecht's 9-yard scoring pass to Ballentine wrapped up the DePauw scoring before O'Leary connected with Kim for a 20-yard score which was the fourth touchdown of the day for Kim.
McCahill completed 19-of-23 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns with seven going to Shaw for 129 yards.
Caden Whitehead rushed for 119 yards on 16 carries.
O'Leary totaled 466 passing yards after completing 28-of-43 passes with four touchdowns. Kim caught nine for 280 yards and Finn Murray finished with 10 catches for 121 yards.Â
Luke Marsh and
Jonathan Bruder each had seven tackles for DePauw with Mychael Leno finishing with 12 for the Owls.
DePauw outgained Kenyon in total offense, 619-602, including 282-136 on the ground.
The Tigers host Oberlin on Saturday, Nov. 5, with a 1 p.m. kickoff from Nick Mourouzis Field at Blackstock Stadium.
