Greencastle, Ind.- Coming back from a two-goal deficit, the DePauw men's soccer team rallied to knot the game up at two apiece for its fifth tie of the season. The Tigers move to 0-4-2 in NCAC play, while the Yeomen move to 1-4-2.
Â
From the start, Oberlin pushed play into DePauw's defensive half, forcing short passes and deflected clears. The Yeomen's pressure paid off in the 9th minute when Xander Francoeur rushed
Alexander Lundin, jammed up his followthrough, and deflected Lundin's clear back into the Tigers net to put Oberlin up 1-0. Lundin was later relieved by
Evan Sajtar in the net in the 19th minute.
Â
Unfortunately for the Tigers, in the 29th minute, a misdirected clear from a corner kick led to an own goal and put DePauw down 2-0 heading into the half.
Â
Despite the deficit, DePauw came out of halftime energized, flying around the field and creating opportunities at the net. The Tigers were piecing together a promising attack on the right side of the field led by
Tye Williams when he went down hard after a sliding tackle. After an extended stoppage due to Williams' injury, DePauw and Oberlin continued their contest.
Â
In the 75th minute, the Tigers would cut the Yeomen's lead to one. Initiating the scoring opportunity was a monstrous throw by
Alex Backhaus, who placed the ball just inside the box. As it bounced around between defenders and strikers,
Ben Weidner got a piece of the ball and tucked it into the back of Oberlin's net.Â
Â
With the late goal by DePauw, momentum began to shift in the Tigers' favor, and in the 83rd minute of play, a free-kick attempt taken by Backhaus led to an equalizing header by
Nick Pease.Â
Â
As time ticked down in regulation, both teams sought to take the lead but ultimately finished in a 2-2 tie. The Tiger completed the matchup outshooting Oberlin 15-9 and had the edge in corner kick attempts 8-4.
Â
Sajtar finished the match with two saves, while the Yeomen's Colvin Iorio had five saves for the day.
Â
The Tigers travel to Granville, Ohio, to take on the Denison Big Red on Tuesday, October 25, at 7 p.m.
