Tigers Suffer Season's First Loss

Story Links

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw scored on its second possession of the game, but visiting Wittenberg scored 30 unanswered points and topped the host Tigers, 30-7, on Old Gold Day at Blackstock Stadium. DePauw, ranked 23rd in the latest coaches' poll and 25th by D3football.com, slipped to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Wittenberg improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC. The loss ended the Tigers' 13-game home win streak with the last loss coming to Wittenberg on September 28, 2019.

After a couple of defensive stops to start the game, DePauw took over on the Wittenberg 46. Jaylon Smith rushed for six yards on first down before quarterback Wally Renie rushed for 15 yards and then completed a 9-yard pass to Trey Shaw. Gus Baumgartner then carried for 16 yards and the game's first score with 7:57 left in the first.

Wittenberg then drove to the DePauw 34, but the hosts' defense stopped them on downs. Nathan McCahill replaced Renie at quarterback  after the latter left the game due to injury. McCahill's third-down pass was tipped by Matt Render and picked off by Grant Hollinger at the DePauw 40 and returned to the Tigers' 13. Collin Brown teamed with Drew Sterett for a 13-yard scoring pass on the next play to even the count at 7-7 with 1:57 remaining in the first.

Renie re-entered the game on the next series, but left for good after completing a 5-yard pass to Shaw on the first play. Drew Moore picked up 14 yards on the next play and McCahill connected with Smith for a 28-yard gain to the Wittenberg 38. Faced with a fourth-and-three, McCahill called his own number and picked up a first to the Wittenberg 27. However, two plays later, Jourdan Stipe picked off a pass to end the threat.

The teams exchanged punts for most of the period before Anthony Pedro intercepted a DePauw pass at the Wittenberg 40 and returned it seven yards. Six plays later, Brown scored on a 4-yard run to make it 14-7 with just 22 seconds left in the half.

Wittenberg's defense stopped the Tigers on the first series of the second half and its offense embarked on the longest drive of the game covering 87 yards in 12 plays with Bryce Anderson scoring on a 10-yard run with 7:44 remaining in the third.

Later in the third, DePauw started on its own 22, but a bad snap on first down pushed the Tigers back to the 11 and a fumble on the next play went out of the end zone for a safety to make it 23-7 with 4:51 left in the third.

Pedro's second interception of the game on the first play of a DePauw drive late in the third set up Anderson's 23-yard scoring run on the next play to push the lead to 30-7.

DePauw drove to the Wittenberg 10 early in the fourth but turned the ball over on downs.

Renie completed 4-of-5 passes for 33 yards, while McCahill was 6-of-16 for 100 yards and Collin Knecht 1-of-3. McCahill rushed for 39 yards with Smith catching four passes for 88 yards.

Garrett Gross rushed for 131 yards on 25 carries and Anderson added 70 yards. Brown, who entered the game ranked fifth in the nation in passing efficiency and 14th in completion percentage was 7-of-16 for 71 yards. Jake Saus caught three passes for 12 yards.

Jonathan Bruder paced DePauw with 10 tackles, while Luke Marsh added eight. Ethan Lowry led with 2.0 tackles for loss, while Ben Burger had 1.5 sacks.

Tony Calovini led Wittenberg with eight tackles and Cameron Snurr added seven.

Wittenberg outgained the Tigers 301-245 and held an 18-9 edge in first downs as the hosts achieved only four first downs over the final three quarters. The Tigers' four turnovers matched their season total for the first five games and DePauw came into the contest with the fourth-ranked red zone defense at 25.0% (1-4), but Wittenberg was successful on all three of its red zone opportunities.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, October 22, at Ohio Wesleyan.

I chose DePauw because I wanted to continue my football career at a school that was competitive academically. The Monon Bell and Management Fellows Program were two factors that drew me into DePauw. What also interested me was the opportunity athletes had to join Greek life which showed me the social environment someone is provided with when attending DePauw. Internship and study abroad opportunities during J term and the spring were intriguing as well.
