Box Score Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw sophomore Maddie Howe nailed 3-pointers on the Tigers' first two possessions of the fourth quarter and added two more free throws to start a 15-5 run which gave DePauw a 48-41 win over Wittenberg in Neal Fieldhouse. DePauw, ranked seventh in Division III, moved to 5-0, while Wittenberg dropped to 0-3.
DePauw took a 25-22 lead into the halftime intermission, but Wittenberg opened the third period with seven straight points to take its biggest lead of the half at 29-25. Maeve Summerville buried a three and Imani Graham added a layup before Summerville capped a 7-0 DePauw run with a layup with 1:46 left to make it 32-29. Mackenie Pauley's trey at the end of the third sent the teams to the final quarter tied at 32-32.
Howe broke the deadlock just 18 seconds into the fourth and, after Wittenberg countered with a bucket, Howe's third triple of the game and two more free throws pushed the host's lead to 40-34. Kristie Kalis knocked in a three to trim the deficit to three, but DePauw converted three Wittenberg turnovers into points as Howe hit her another 3-pointer and Hayley Cange and Graham followed with baskets to give DePauw its largest lead of the game at 47-37 with 3:13 remaining.
Howe led all scorers with a career-high 14 with Summerville adding 10. Cange led with seven rebounds and Grace Kinsey and Maura Fitzgerald each handed out four assists. Kalis paced Wittenberg with 10 points and Evie Wolshire added seven boards.
The two teams square off on Saturday, February 20, with a 4 p.m. tipoff.
