Waukesha, Wis. - DePauw led by as many as 14 and took and 8-point advantage into the final period, but Carroll (Wis.) outscored the Tigers, 18-4, over the final 3:39 and eliminated the Tigers from the NCAA Division III Championship with a 74-67 first-round victory. DePauw finished its season at 19-10, while the Pioneers improved to 23-5. Carroll will face Wis.-La Crosse in tomorrow's second-round game after the Eagles topped LaGrange by a 78-52 score.
Carroll grabbed an early 7-2 lead, but DePauw scored the next eight at the start of a 14-2 stretch and took a 16-11 lead into the second period.
The Tigers extended the lead to as many as 14 in the second at 34-20 before the Pioneers closed the gap to 39-30 at the intermission.
DePauw stretched the margin back to 12 in the third at 53-41 after
Diana Burgher's jumper with 3:53 left, but Emilie Wizner and Julia Lokker each hit threes to close the deficit to six. Carroll was as close at five before
Riley Mont converted a three-point play with five seconds left in the period to make it 57-49.
Carroll closed the gap to five three times in the opening six minutes of the final period with DePauw answering each time. Natalie Gricius' three-point play with 3:39 left trimmed the Tigers' lead to 63-58. DePauw was whistled for a foul after a turnover and Anna Nielsen knocked in 1-of-2 to make it 63-60 at the 3:12 mark.
The Tigers couldn't convert on the offensive end and were called for another foul and Gricius hit two more from the stripe to close the gap to 63-62 with 2:55 remaining.
Olivia Hart made one free throw with 2:33 left to extend the lead to two before Ryann Wendt evened the score with a second-chance layup with just over two minutes left.
After a couple of misses on their next offensive possession, the Tigers were called for a shot clock violation and Lokker capitalized with a second-chance bucket to give the Pioneers a 66-64 lead with 55 seconds left.
Carroll hit four straight free throws after DePauw misses to push the lead to 70-64 with 40 seconds remaining. Gricius knocked in four more charity tosses in the final 27 seconds which sandwiched a
Riley Mont 3-pointer and wrapped up the scoring.
Mont led the Tigers with 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists with Hart totaling 14 points and
Tori Allen 13.
Diana Burgher rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.
Gricius led Carroll with 39 points including 16 in the fourth period, while Lokker followed with 16 points and Winzner with 12. Katie Barger grabbed eight rebounds and Wendt totaled eight assists.
DePauw shot 38.2 percent for the game to Carroll's 46.4 percent and the Tigers held a 41-32 rebounding edge for a 22-6 lead in second-chance points. Four of Carroll's second-chance points came in the fourth quarter. The Tigers committed just nine turnovers to the Pioneers' eight.Â
