Tigers Fall to Lions in Overtime in Hasbrook Title Game

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw battled back from a 9-point deficit in the third period to take a 4-point lead late in the fourth, but Piedmont forced overtime with a pair of free throws with 1.4 seconds left in regulation and hit the game-winning basket with 5.6 seconds remaining in overtime to claim a 75-74 win over the Tigers in the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament championship game. DePauw, ranked ninth by D3hoops.com and 10th in the latest coaches' poll, dropped to 11-2, while the Lions improved to 8-3.

Piedmont led, 15-8, at the end of the first quarter and extended the advantage to as many as eight points in the second before the Tigers ended the opening half on a 7-2 run to even the count at 30-30 at the intermission.

The Tigers gained their first lead of the game early in the third, but a 10-0 Piedmont run gave the guests a 42-33 lead with 5:33 left in the third. DePauw chipped away at its largest deficit of the contest with a 9-2 stretch to close the third and trail 44-43. Isabella Ogliore's putback bucket and Maura Fitzgerald's 3-pointer gave the Tigers a 48-44 lead with 7:31 remaining in regulation.

Piedmont responded with a 10-2 run to grab a 54-50 advantage, but Campbell Montgomery hit a free throw and Ainsley Boras knocked in a three to even the count at 54-54. Maeve Summerville's 3-pointer with 2:03 remaining put the Tigers ahead, 62-58 before Nakiyah Washington's bucket at the 1:37 mark cut the DePauw lead to two. Neither team scored over their next two possessions and a DePauw turnover with seven seconds left gave the ball back to the Lions. Washington was fouled with 1.4 seconds left and drained both free throws. Summerville's layup at the horn was off the mark and the teams headed to overtime.

The extra session went back-and-forth with four ties and nine lead changes. Summerville's basket with 29 seconds left gave DePauw a 72-71 lead before Livia Skinner countered with a layup just two seconds later following a Piedmont timeout.

Kinsey's layup with 10.2 seconds left put the Tigers back in front, 74-73, before Karla Cantrell scored the game-winner with 5.6 seconds remaining. Summerville's jumper at the horn was off the mark.

Kinsey posted her first collegiate double-double with career highs of 18 points and 10 assists and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Boras recorded career bests of 12 points and eight rebounds with Maddie Howe adding 11 points and Montgomery 10.

Skinner, the tournament's most valuable player, led all scorers with 20 including nine in overtime. She added seven assists in the win, while Washington scored 18 and Varney contributed 13 points and five steals. Varney and Avery McAllister each grabbed five rebounds. 

DePauw shot 46.4 percent from the floor to Piedmont's 40.0 and DePauw held a 44-26 edge on the boards. The Lions committed just nine turnovers, while the Tigers had a season-high 21. Piedmont held a 27-4 advantage in points off of turnovers.

Milwaukee School of Engineering finished third in the tournament following a 74-71 overtime win over Franklin in the day's first game. Emily Runey led MSOE with 15 points, while Cici Bailey paced the Grizzlies with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Each earned spots on the all-tournament team.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, January 8, when it travels to Allegheny for a 1 p.m. contest.

I loved the friendly atmosphere at DePauw right when I visited on campus! I also thought that DePauw offered a lot of ways to grow as a student and to explore what I would like to study. Lastly, I really liked the fact that I could play basketball and be involved in other things that DePauw has!
