Box Score Daytona Beach, Fla. - Behind career-high scoring efforts from Elijah Hales and Nick Wissel, DePauw topped Salisbury by an 87-75 score in the final game of the Daytona Beach Shootout. The Tigers moved to 5-6, while the Seagulls are now 5-8.
Salisbury gained an early 11-3 lead, but the Tigers responded with a 12-2 run to take their first lead of the contest at 15-13.
After the Seagulls regained the lead at 19-17, Hales hit 3-pointers on three-straight possessions to give DePauw its largest lead at 26-21. The Tigers' largest lead of the half came at 31-25 and the Tigers went to the intermission with a 43-42 advantage after Wissel's 3-point play with 39 seconds left closed out the scoring.
The second half was a tight battle and DePauw held a 70-67 lead with six minutes left before Grant Niego made a layup and then Nolan Niego converted a Salisbury turnover into a fast break score. Hales' jumper and a Grant Niego free throw at the 4:02 mark pushed the Tigers' lead to 77-67. The Seagulls were no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Hales netted 31 in the win and hit 7-of-15 3-pointers, while Wissel and Grant Niego each finished with 16. Brandon Craig paced Salisbury with 21 points followed by Gary Briddell with 19 and Greg Bloodswoth with 15. The Seagulls held a 33-26 rebounding edge and were led by Craig and Biddell with six each. Grant Niego grabbed a career-high seven rebounds for the Tigers.
DePauw matched a season-high by shooting 54.4 percent from the floor and nailed 10-of-23 3-pointers, while Salisbury shot 47.5 percent and just 41.4 percent in the second half. The Tigers committed just five turnovers to the Seagulls' 10 and held a 12-4 edge in points off of turnovers.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, January 2, when they host Rochester in a Noon contest in Neal Fieldhouse.
