Tigers Topple Scots in Season Opener

Box Score

Wilmington, Ohio- Paced by career-high scoring efforts from Mya Shannon, the Tigers opened its 2021-22 season with a 72-66 victory over Alma College in game one of the Wilmington Tip-Off Classic.

In the first quarter, the Scots found the bottom of the net first and traded baskets with the Tigers until the final two minutes. Alma's Madison Robbins, with 2:17 left in the opening quarter, grabbed a defensive rebound and jump-started a 6-2 run to put the Scots up 24-18 entering the second quarter.

Both teams struggled to find a rhythm in the second quarter, with the Tigers shooting just 16% from the field while holding Alma to 12%. Down 26 to 28 at the start of the third, the Tigers bench managed to keep DePauw neck in neck with the Scots, pulling seven of the team's ten rebounds and scoring seven of the team's 18 points in the quarter.

After five lead changes and 11 ties across the four quarters, the Tigers pulled away to an 11 point lead thanks to the offensive efforts by Ava Hassel, who put up eight points in a span of 90 seconds. The 11 point cushion proved to be too much for the Scots to come back from, resulting in DePauw coming out on top in game one of the Wilmington Tip-Off Classic.

Shannon led the team in points and tied for most rebounds, with a career-high 28 points and nine rebounds. Also grabbing nine rebounds was Maeve Summerville, who finished the night with two assists and one steal. Hassel finished the night as the second-leading scorer for the Tigers with 11 points, recorded two assists and steals, and grabbed three rebounds.

DePauw moves to 1-0 and faces Calvin College on Saturday, November 13, at 2 pm EST, on day two of the Wilmington Tip-Off Classic.

I loved the friendly atmosphere at DePauw right when I visited on campus! I also thought that DePauw offered a lot of ways to grow as a student and to explore what I would like to study. Lastly, I really liked the fact that I could play basketball and be involved in other things that DePauw has!
