Box Score Greencastle, Ind. - Ten months have passed since the last time a DePauw team played a game that counted and the DePauw men's basketball team made every second count on the way to a record-breaking 148-102 win over visiting Greenville in Neal Fieldhouse. The Tigers moved to 1-0, while the Panthers dropped to 0-4.
Greenville plays "system" basketball which includes full-court pressure and trapping in the half court which generally leads to triple-digit scoring for both teams. The Tigers never trailed after scoring the game's first eight points. DePauw's biggest scoring run of the contest was 12 straight midway through the first half as the Tigers pushed a four-point lead to 16. The margin reached as much as 34 at 62-28 on Aaron Shank's layup with 4:07 left. DePauw took a 70-44 lead into the intermission and the 70 points topped the previous DePauw record for a half of 68 which was set against IU-Kokomo on December 12, 1989.
The Tigers opened the second half with three turnovers in the opening 1:18 and the Panthers took advantage with a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 72-53. Greenville was within 17 at 76-59, but DePauw gradually pulled away. Shank's 3-pointer with 4:41 left extended the Tigers' lead to 125-89 and broke the DePauw single-game scoring mark of 122 set against Ball State on Jan. 29, 1969. The record for points in a half was short-lived as the Tigers put together a 78-point second half.
Shank scored a career-high 32 and hit 15-of-16 field goals, while Ken Decker added 18 followed by Nick Felke with 16, Matthew Godfrey with a career-high matching 15 and Cole Brady with a career-best 12.
Remllo Ball paced Greenville with 15 followed by Ralph Jalnaiz and Henry Johnson with 13 each. Jarred Johnson added 11 and Julius Erby 10.
DePauw held a 65-35 edge on the boards as Nolan Ginther hauled down a career-high 15. The Tigers dished out 48 assists and shattered the previous mark of 33 set against Webster on both Jan. 17, 1986 and Feb. 7, 1988. That mark also broke the North Coast Athletic Conference record of 41 by Wooster in 2005. Felke paced the Tigers with a career-high 13 assists with Ginther also handing out a career-best with nine.
The Tigers shot 72.0 percent from the floor which was just shy of the 73.2 percent mark against Olivet on Dec. 18, 1987. DePauw's 59 field goals broke the school record of 51 in the IU-Kokomo contest.
