#4 DePauw Overcomes 17-Point Deficit to Win; Kopp Becomes All-Time Scoring Leader

Box Score

Hiram, Ohio - On a day when senior guard Sydney Kopp became the program's all-time scoring leader, the fourth-ranked Tigers overcame a 17-point deficit on the way to a 65-62 North Coast Athletic Conference victory at Hiram. DePauw improved to 21-1 overall with its 17th straight win and also moved to 13-0 in conference play to clinch a share of its eighth NCAC title in nine seasons of play in the league. Hiram dropped to 7-15 overall and 4-9 in the NCAC.

Kopp scored DePauw's first nine points, but Hiram held a 14-11 lead after the opening quarter. The Tigers were still within four at 24-20 after Maeve Summerville's bucket, but Hiram rattled off the next five to start a 14-4 run that was capped by Alainna Conroy's steal and layup with 49 seconds left to make it 38-24. Conroy's jumper just before the first-half buzzer gave the Terriers a 42-28 lead at the intermission. Hiram's second quarter included 11-of-18 shooting from the floor and the Terriers committed just one turnover over the opening 20 minutes.

With her layup at the 8:44 mark of the third, Kopp broke Maya Howard's (2015-19) record of 1,539 points. Haley Thompson's 3-pointer a little less than a minute later gave Hiram its largest lead of the game at 47-30. Kopp came right back with a three and Thompson countered with a bucket before the Tigers scored the next seven including five from Kopp and two from Grace Kinsey to close the gap to 49-40 with 5:32 remaining in the third.

Thompson pushed the margin back to 11 with a couple of free throws, but DePauw closed the quarter with 10 straight points to trim the Terriers' lead to 51-50 at the quarter break. Kopp's jumper in the opening minute of the fourth gave the Tigers their first lead since midway through the first. Hiram's Tashauna Wright evened the count at 55-55 with a bucket, but Summerville, Kopp and Mya Shannon scored on consecutive possessions to give the Tigers a 61-55 lead. Thompson hit a three and a layup before Madison Branch nailed a jumper to cap a 7-0 Hiram run which put the hosts back in front, 62-61, with 2:14 left.

Shannon converted a steal into a layup at the 1:34 mark to give DePauw a 63-62 edge. The Terriers missed on their next possession and the Tigers snagged two offensive rebounds on their next trip down the floor before Shannon drew a foul and hit two free throws with nine seconds left. After a couple of DePauw fouls, Hiram was unable to convert in the closing seconds as time expired.

In addition to Kopp's 26-point effort, Shannon added 11 and Summerville matched a career-high with 10 points with Kopp grabbing 12 rebounds. Thompson and Wright each scored 19 for Hiram with Conroy totaling 11. Wright led with seven rebounds and Branch handed out four assists.

DePauw dominated on the boards with a 52-30 edge and turned 24 offensive rebounds into a 21-8 edge in second-chance points. The Tigers also committed just three second-half turnovers to Hiram's 10.

The Tigers finished with 35.6 percent shooting from the field to Hiram's 39.3.

I chose DePauw because I loved the sense of community on the campus during my visits. I also felt DePauw had a really good balance between academics and athletics, while still providing the opportunity to travel abroad and explore other interests.

I loved the friendly atmosphere at DePauw right when I visited on campus! I also thought that DePauw offered a lot of ways to grow as a student and to explore what I would like to study. Lastly, I really liked the fact that I could play basketball and be involved in other things that DePauw has!
