Box Score Gambier, Ohio- The DePauw University men's basketball team tallied its sixth road and conference victory, after beating the Kenyon College Lords 58-54, in a back and forth rematch game.
Scoreless the first two minutes of the matchup, the Lords would find the bottom of the net first, but Kenyon's lead quickly disappeared after the Tigers drained a three-pointer and jump shot to take its first lead of the game.
Similar to its last matchup against the Lords, Uginius Zilinskas, Kenyon's leading scorer proved to be a problem for DePauw early in the game.
Despite taking a 4-8 lead within the first eight minutes of the game, the Lords would surge back and put in nine baskets of its own to secure a 14-8 lead, with 10 minutes remaining before the half.
That deficit would quickly shrink thanks to a three-pointer from Aaron Shank, followed by an aggressive play in the key by Cayman Lutz, which was then emphasized by the Tigers third and final three of the half by Ken Decker.
Suddenly up 15-14, a seesaw battle to take and hold onto the lead commenced, with four ties and seven lead changes. DePauw would stave off its opponent by capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and getting a much-needed spark off the bench, who outscored the Lords 10-6 in the half.
Up by one at the beginning of the second half, Elijah Hales fought his way to the basket to give the Tigers a three-point lead. DePauw remained on top for the first eight minutes of the second half; however, the Lords adjusted its offense and began attacking the basket, resulting in unwarranted foul trouble for the Tigers.
Jumping to a 34-33 lead, Kenyon would see its advantage disappear almost instantaneously following yet another running layup by Lutz. Though the Lords would remain within one possession of the Tigers for nearly the remainder of the game, DePauw's ability to score behind the arc was just too much for Kenyon to handle.
Shooting just 34.7% from the field, the Tigers nine steals, 15 total second-chance baskets, and going 19-22 from the free-throw line gave DePauw the edge over the Lords.
The Tigers improve to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in the NCAC. DePauw men's basketball is on the road on Wednesday, Jan. 29 to face Wittenberg, with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
