Box Score Greencastle, Ind. - Hayley Cange's put-back with five seconds left stretched DePauw's lead from three to five and the fifth-ranked Tigers held on for a 49-47 North Coast Athletic Conference win over visiting Denison. DePauw moved to 15-1 overall with its 11th straight win, while the Big Red slipped to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Denison jumped out to an early 10-2 lead before the Tigers closed the gap to 12-10 at the quarter break despite shooting just 22.2 percent from the field and missing all eight 3-point attempts. The Big Red still held a 21-14 advantage after Alison Schafer's 3-pointer with 5:14 left in the half.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game by scoring on the next three possessions starting with back-to-back treys from Sydney Kopp and ending with Claire Keefe's layup. Keefe added a 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining to push the lead to 25-21. Over the final five minutes of the half, DePauw limited Denison to 0-of-3 shooting from the floor and the Big Red committed five turnovers.
DePauw carried that momentum into the second half by scoring on its first two possessions. Cange's layup and Kopp's 3-pointer in the opening minute capped a 16-0 run and gave the Old Gold a 30-21 lead. Denison scored the next six and stayed within seven points until Mya Shannon knocked in a three with 24 seconds left in the period to push the Tigers' lead to 42-34.
Kopp's fourth 3-pointer of the contest gave DePauw its largest advantage of the game at 47-36 with 6:27 left. Denison scored eight straight to cut the DePauw lead to 47-44 on Lily Morris' jumper with 35 seconds left.
The Tigers called a timeout with 13 seconds left and got the ball to Kopp who missed a jumper in the key, but Cange rebounded the miss and pushed the lead to five with a layup.
Morris nailed a 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left, but DePauw called timeout and then successfully inbounded the ball as time expired.
Kopp led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed a team-high 10 boards. Shannon added 12 and Keefe 11, while Grace Kinsey dished out four assists.
Shonta Lockett led Denison with 10 points and Lauren Hofer snagged a game-high 12 rebounds.
DePauw shot 31.6 percent from the field to Denison's 37.0 percent, but the Tigers hit 7-of-24 3-pointers to Denison's 3-of-14 performance.
DePauw entered the contest ranked sixth in Division III rebound margin at +13.4, but the Big Red were the first opponent to ourebound the Tigers as they held a 39-35 edge.
The Tigers travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, Jan. 18, for a 1 p.m. NCAC contest.
