Box Score Greencastle, Ind.- The DePauw University men's basketball team fall to the No. 24 Wooster Fighting Scots 68-70, in a tightly contested conference matchup.
Returning home after three big wins the Tigers opened the game with back-to-back layups by Nolan Ginther and a deep three by Luke Steinhart to take an emphatic 7-2 lead.
Holding the lead for the majority of the first half DePauw played tough defense forcing Wooster to commit five turnovers, resulting in 10 points off of fast breaks.
Stretching its lead to as much as seven in the first half, the Tigers found most of its success against the Fighting Scots zone defense in the paint. Putting up 20 points in the paint, eight of which were second chance points.
Despite shutting down Wooster behind the arc and going 5-11 itself, DePauw struggled to string along multiple stops midway through the half, resulting in the Fighting Scots to pull ahead 26-25 and finish out the half with a 15 point run to go into halftime up 41-39
Returning to the court with the same intensity as the first half the Tigers defensive efforts forced early turnovers and locked down Wooster's shooting efforts, allowing DePauw to reclaim the lead.
Though the Tigers were ahead for over 12 minutes of the second half, the Fighting Scots gradually chipped away at DePauw's lead. With just three minutes left in the game Wooster's top scorer Danyon Hempy played both ends of the court with composure, putting in four of the final six points to win the game.
DePauw's loss to the No. 24 Fighting Scots was hard fought and defensively one of its strongest games. Holding Wooster to a total of five made three-pointers, 70 points and 42% from the field in the second half, the Tigers held its own.
DePauw move to 6-8 for the year and return to Neal Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Jan. 15 to play Denison at 6 p.m. ahead of the women's basketball game.
