Tenth-Ranked DePauw Opens NCAC Play with Win at Wittenberg

Springfield, Ohio - Tenth-ranked DePauw used a 13-0 run over a four-minute stretch of the fourth period to pull away from Wittenberg and gain a 70-55 North Coast Athletic Conference victory. DePauw moved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC, while the host Tigers dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

DePauw scored 11 straight in the first quarter to take a two-point deficit to a nine-point lead and held a 16-11 advantage at the quarter break. Trailing by as many as seven in the second, Wittenberg went on a 10-2 run to regain the lead briefly. DePauw scored the next five on the way to a 34-32 halftime lead.

While Wittenberg tied the game early in the third, DePauw regained the lead for the rest of the period. The hosts scored on the first possession of the final period to close the gap to 45-44 before DePauw used an 8-2 stretch to extend the margin to seven. Wittenberg closed to within four with the last happening with 6:00 remaining. Sydney Kopp's field goal with 5:27 left was followed by a pair of Claire Keefe field goals. 

Wittenberg turned the ball over for a second straight possession and Mya Shannon added a bucket with 3:05 left following a pair of DePauw offensive rebounds and pushed the lead to 12. Shannon nailed two free throws with 1:42 remaining following a Wittenberg offensive foul on the previous possession. Grace Kinsey hit a free throw and later scored on a layup cap the 13-0 run and extend the lead to 70-53.

Keefe paced DePauw with 12 points, while Hayley Cange, Kinsey and Shannon each scored 11. Cange added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Delaney Williams led Wittenberg with 17 points with Nora Hopkins adding 13 and Korynne Berner 10 along with 11 rebounds.

DePauw shot 48.1 percent for the game  including 58.8 percent in the fourth with Wittenberg shooting 38.5 percent for the game. The Tigers held a 31-23 rebounding edge and committed 12 turnovers to Wittenberg's 14. In the decisive fourth quarter, DePauw didn't commit a turnover, while Wittenberg had five.

DePauw returns to NCAC play on Saturday, December 7, with a 1 p.m. game at Oberlin.
