Tigers Fall to Titans in Opening Round of Midwest Challenge

Terre Haute, Ind. - Illinois Wesleyan shot 68.6 percent from the field in the opening quarter and got out to a 30-12 first-quarter lead on the way to an 80-60 win over DePauw in the second game of the Midwest Challenge at Rose-Hulman. The Tigers, ranked ninth in the latest coaches' poll and 13th in the D3hoops.com preseason rankings, dropped to 3-1, while the Titans (11th coaches'/12th d3hoops) improved to 3-2.

Illinois Wesleyan hit 4 of 6 from beyond the arc in the opening 10 minutes and led by as many as 22 in the opening half before taking a 46-27 advantage into the intermission. The Titans' press helped led to 11 DePauw turnovers in the first half of which Illinois Wesleyan converted into 12 points.

Sydney Kopp paced DePauw with 20 points, while Claire Keefe grabbed six rebounds in the loss and Maya Howard dished out five assists. Imani Graham led with three steals.

Nina Anderson, Maddie Merritt and Riley Brovelli each scored 14 in the win for the Titans with Kendall Sosa adding 12 and Sydney Shanks 10. Brovelli grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the double-double and Shanks handed out five assists and recorded four steals.

DePauw shot 33.3 percent from the field and from 3-point range, while Illinois Wesleyan connected on 50.8 percent from the floor and hit 34.8 percent from 3-point range.

The Titans also held a 41-37 edge on the boards and committed 15 turnovers to the Tigers' 15.

DePauw faces Rose-Hulman in the 2 p.m. third-place game tomorrow. The Engineers lost to 20th-ranked WashU in today's opening game by a 62-37 score.
