Allegheny Scores 10 Points in Final Six Minutes to Rally for Win over DePauw

Box Score

Meadville, Pa. - Allegheny's Zach Bednarowicz booted a 26-yard field goal with 11 seconds left as Allegheny scored 10 points in the final six minutes for a 20-19 North Coast Athletic Conference win over DePauw. The Tigers dropped to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the NCAC, while Allegheny improved to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the conference.

The Tigers took a 16-10 lead after Jake Tanner booted a 24-yard field with 10:50 left in the third. DePauw drove to the Allegheny 11 on its next possession, but a sack on third down and a delay of game penalty as the field goal unit was on the field forced the Tigers into a fourth-and-23 situation. Chase Andries was unable to connect with Logan Greene near the goal line on the next play.

Midway through the fourth it appeared the Tigers were about to push the lead to 22-10 after Noah Jones broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run, but he was called for unsportsmanlike conduct at the 4 and the Tigers later had to settle for a Tanner 31-yard field goal with 6:52 left to make it 19-10.

Allegheny's Tristan Rhodes returned the ensuing kickoff to the DePauw 43 and quarterback Logan Lee teamed with Ben Bachik for a 40-yard pass play on the first play from scrimmage. Tyler Balla then picked up two yards on a first-down run and scored from the 1 on the next play. After the point-after, the Gators trailed by just two at 19-17 with 5:55 left.

DePauw was unable to pick up a first down on its next series and the Gators drove to the DePauw 18, but Bednarowicz missed on a 35-yard field goal try with 2:14 remaining.

The Tigers took over on their own 20 but again were unable to pick up a first down and were forced to punt. The Gators started from their own 46 with 1:11 left. Lee connected with Tristan Rhoades for 29 yards to the DePauw 25 on third down and then for 16 yards with Dwaine Barber on another third down play to the Tigers' 9. After failing to connect on three straight passes, Allegheny brought Bednarowicz on for the go-ahead field goal.

The Tigers' final drive started on their 21 after a fair catch of the kickoff. Andries completed a pass to Jackson Hamersly on first down to the DePauw 37, but was picked off at the Allegheny 20 as time expired.

DePauw opened the game with a drive to the Allegheny 20, but Tanner missed from 38 yards. Later in the quarter, Bednarowicz booted a 28-yard field goal after Allegheny's Kyle McGee intercepted Andries at the DePauw 19 and returned it to the 10.

The Tigers got on the board shortly after that as Andries teamed with Ethan Hudson for a 39-yard score after he connected with Blake Podschlne for 23 yards on the previous play. A bobble after the extra-point snap left the DePauw lead at 6-3 with 13:51 left in the half.

Allegheny regained the lead on Balla's 20-yard run with 6:07 remaining in the half, but the Tigers took a 13-10 advantage after Andries tossed a 30-yard pass to Will Harris with 3:06 left.

DePauw outgained Allegheny, 364-288, including 148-77 on the ground. The Tigers also held an 18-12 edge in first downs.

Andries completed 14 of 30 passes for 216 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Harris and Hamersly each had five catches. Jones rushed for a team-high 41 yards.

Lee completed 15 of 37 for 211 yards and one interception with five going to Balla. Balla also rushed for 90 yards on 21 carries.

Hunter Sego led the DePauw defense with nine tackles, while Matt Crupi followed with seven and an interception. Nate Orrison recorded 1.5 of DePauw's three sacks.

McGee paced Allegheny with 12 tackles with Marcus Davenport following with 10. Chase Balla had 2.5 of the Gators' 3 sacks.

DePauw wraps up the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, November 3, with a 1 p.m. contest against Kenyon.
