DePauw Rolls to 35-7 Win over John Carroll in Battle of Nationally-Ranked Squads

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw converted four John Carroll turnovers into scores and came away with a 35-7 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Blue Streaks on Nick Mourouzis Field. The Tigers, ranked 21st in the coaches' poll and 25th by D3football.com, improved to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in the NCAC with its sixth straight win. John Carroll, ranked 12th in the coaches' poll and 14th by D3football.com, dropped to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

The Tigers picked up a first down on their initial drive of the game, but were forced to punt after reaching midfield. The Blue Streaks drove to the DePauw 5 on their first series, but Tyler Green's pass on second down was picked off in the end zone by DePauw's Harry Pratt.

DePauw then took 8:22 off the clock, while driving 80 yards in 14 plays capped by Carson Johnson's 2-yard touchdown run with 10:52 left in the second. The Tigers converted four third-down situations in the series.

On the Blue Streaks' second play of their next series, Devin Taylor was stopped for a 3-yard gain, but DePauw asked for a video review for a possible fumble. The play was determined to be a fumble forced by Robert Pasinato and recovered by DePauw's Chris Green at the John Carroll 39.

The Tigers again took advantage as Johnson picked up seven yards on the first play and six on the second before receiver Evan Pitzer tossed a 26-yard reverse pass into the hands of Johnson in the end zone to make it 14-0 with 8:41 left in the half.

The Blue Streaks countered as they drove 82 yards in nine plays with Cohen Klimak scoring on a 23-yard run to cut the lead in half at 14-7 with 4:13 remaining in the period. Two plays earlier backup quarterback Bryce Tubin converted a fourth-down with a 2-yard run.

DePauw was forced to punt on its next possession and John Carroll drove to the DePauw 17, but Pasinato stopped Shane Lindstrom for a 1-yard loss after his catch from Green on second down. An incomplete pass on third down forced the Blue Streaks to attempt a 35-yard field goal, but Colin Schuler's boot was off the mark.

John Carroll started the second half on its own 42 after a short kickoff that sailed out-of-bounds. Green converted a third-and-long to keep the drive going, but DePauw's Toreeq Jimoh-Oyesigi broke up a third-down pass at the DePauw 38 and John Carroll punted.

The Tigers started on their own 15 yard line and drove methodically down the field. Jack Kazmierczak's 18-yard pass to Frankie Ricciardi on third-and-13 advanced the ball to the DePauw 41. After Logan Shoffner's 9-yard run, Kazmierczak and Ricciardi teamed again for a 33-yard gain to the John Carroll 17. Shoffner carried the next three for six, three and seven yards to the 1. The final run was ruled a touchdown on the field, but after a review it was determined that Shoffner was down at the 1. Pitzer then took a direct snap and scored on the next play to extend the lead to 21-7 with 6:57 left in the third.

The teams exchanged punts and John Carroll started on its own 19 with 2:12 left in the third. A pair of Green completions gave the Blue Streaks a first down, but a holding penalty moved them back to the 24. DePauw's Nehemiah Dau sacked Green for a 7-yard loss on the final play of third forcing a punt.

Neither team could sustain a drive through the opening portion of the fourth quarter. John Carroll started a drive on its own 9 with 6:55 left and picked up a first down, but Pratt collected his second interception of the game when he picked off Green at the John Carroll 45.

The Tigers needed just six plays with Pitzer leaping for a 1-yard score to extend the lead to 28-7 with 3:44 left in the game.

The Blue Streaks advanced to the DePauw 27 on the ensuing drive, but Green was intercepted by Jackson Cain who took it 80 yards for the game's final touchdown.

Johnson rushed for 112 yards on 24 carries for his third 100-yard effort of the season. Kazmierczak completed 13-of-22 passes for 168 yards with four going to Palmer Samuels for 20 yards. Pitzer caught three for 35 yards and Johnson hauled in two for 65 yards.

Klimak led John Carroll with 46 rushing yards in seven tries with Taylor totaling 45 in seven attempts. Green completed 28-of-47 passes for 274 yards and three interceptions. Nico McBride caught seven for 113 yards to lead the Blue Streaks.

Pratt recorded a career-high 14 tackles along with his two interceptions and Pasinato finished with eight stops and a forced fumble. Thomas Niederst and Thomas Shondel had nine tackles each for John Carroll.

John Carroll outgained DePauw, 378-346, but the Tigers held a 152-104 advantage on the ground. The Blue Streaks also led in first downs, 20-19.

DePauw travels to Wooster on Saturday, Nov. 7, for a 1 p.m. game.
