Box Score Greencastle, Ind. – The DePauw men's basketball team saw its fair share of ups and downs against Hiram on Saturday, but one too many Terrier runs was enough to defeat the Tigers 72-65.
DePauw held the lead for the opening 12 minutes but lost it for good at 18-17 with 8:21 remaining in the first half. Hiram went on to lead at halftime 31-25. In the second half, DePauw got to within four at 36-33 with 17:37 remaining but that's when a string of runs determined the rest of the game.
Hiram scored eight consecutive points in the next 55 seconds, starting with an and-1 via an offensive putback. A steal by Austen Rekolt, a 3-pointer by J.J. Woodson and a layup from Paul Ortiz on the next two possessions made it 44-32. The scoring amounted to a 13-3 run as Hiram led 49-35 in what would be their biggest lead of the game.
Yet, DePauw responded with a 16-6 run of their own to pull within four points at 55-51 with 8:14 remaining. The run featured four three-pointers and ended on a pair of back-to-back treys from Andrew Kus and David Vogel.
However, Hiram went off on another run of their own as a 13-4 span in the next six minutes made it a 68-55 game with 2:07 remaining. DePauw made it a 70-65 game off a 3-pointer by Nate Jahn but there would not be enough time with just 28 seconds remaining.
Jack VandeMerkt led the Tigers with 17 points and five rebounds. Cris Burrough added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. Luke Lattned scored 15, David Vogel added nine points on three 3-pointers and Bradley Fey scored seven.
Kelvin Jones led Hiram with a double-double at 20 points and 10 rebounds. Hiram outrebounded the Tigers 47-32. DePauw held the advantage in points in the paint (24-20) and fast break points (11-2). They also committed 10 turnovers to Hiram's 19.
The loss drops DePauw to 7-14 overall and 3-11 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Hiram moves to 15-6 overall and 9-5 in the NCAC.
