Greencastle, Ind. – The DePauw women's tennis team lost to Carnegie Mellon 8-1 in the opening round of the 2016 Division III Women's Team Indoor Championship on Friday.
DePauw's lone win came from Ali Bush at No. 5 singles. She defeated Minami Makino 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 1-0 (10-3).
Maddie Lee took her opponent to three sets but lost 6-2, 0-6, 6-1. The rest of the Tigers were defeated in straight sets.
Alyssa Seneviratne lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, Gretchen Wilder lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Colleen Morris lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Megan Galle lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
In doubles competition, No. 1 seed Carnegie Mellon got the match started with a 3-0 lead, winning 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, and 8-2 in both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
The loss puts DePauw in the consolation bracket where next they'll face Washington and Lee at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The fourth-seeded Washington and Lee lost an early lead to Johns Hopkins and suffered a 5-4 defeat. Carnegie Mellon will face Johns Hopkins at 2 p.m.
On the other end of the bracket, No. 2 seed Pomona-Pitzer defeated No. 7 seed Washington-St. Louis 7-2. No. 6 seed Sewanee held off No. 4 MIT 5-4.
MIT and Washington-St. Louis will meet in the consolation bracket at 8:30 a.m., while Sewanee and Pomona-Pitzer will follow at 2 p.m. The 5th/6th place match and the 7th/8th place match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The championship will play 10 a.m. Sunday.
