Tigers nearly complete comeback, fall to Kenyon

Greencastle, Ind. – The DePauw men's basketball team nearly erased a 12-point second half deficit from Kenyon, but Luke Lattner's last second shot fell short and the Tigers lost 81-79 on its senior day.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 7-16 overall and 3-13 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Kenyon improved to 9-14 overall and 6-10 in conference play.

DePauw held a 41-36 lead at halftime but Kenyon started the second half on a 13-0 run until Jack VandeMerkt gave DePauw its first points of the half with 14:39 remaining.

The lead reached as large as 12 at 58-46 with 12:32 remaining, but it wasn't until there were five minutes remaining when DePauw truly started its comeback bid. Trailing 74-67 with 4:44 remaining, DePauw cut the lead to one at 78-77 in three minutes.

They ended a 10-4 stretch on back-to-back 3-pointers from Nate Jahn and David Vogel and took the lead on the ensuing possession on a layup by Lattner.

Kenyon tied it with a free throw at 79 with 52 seconds remaining. That score remained the same until Tim Connolly connected on a game-winning layup with three second remaining.

With one last chance, Lattner took the ball from half court to the top of the key but missed the potential game tying shot.

VandeMerkt led the Tigers with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lattner had 15 points, and James Clarke scored 14 points in the first half, which is a new career high.

Kenyon was led by Alexander Powell's 22 points. Connolly added 18 points.

DePauw's free throw shooting also hurt, connecting on 10-of-23 shots (44 percent). On the other side, Kenyon shot 78 percent (21-of-27).

Kenyon shot 48 percent from the floor (28-of-58) to DePauw's 44 percent (28-of-64). DePauw shot 48 percent from 3-point range (13-of-27) while Kenyon only shot 25 percent (4-of-16).

Kenyon won the battle on the boards 39-32 but committed 14 turnovers to DePauw's eight. Kenyon also outscored the Tigers in the paint 42-26.

The Tigers return to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when they host Wabash.
