Greencastle, Ind.- For the first time in nine years the DePauw women's tennis team is heading back to the NCAA Quarterfinals after defeating Wisconsin-Whitewater, 5-0 in third round action Saturday afternoon at Blackstock Courts.
The 14th-ranked Tigers improved to 16-8 on the year, while the 28th-ranked Warhawks dropped to 24-5.
A doubles sweep set the tone for DePauw as Carolyn Huerth and Taylor Mahr defeated Alexandra Talyansky and Rachel Siemon 8-2 in No. 3 doubles for the Tigers' first point. Julie Wittwer and Kaitlin Pickrel took care of business in the second flight, beating Alicia Beck and Jillian Wallace 8-3.
After trailing for the first time all regional, Claire Marshall and Maggie MacPhail battled back to take an 8-4 decision over Megan Humphreys and Bridgid McGuire in the top doubles flight.
In singles play, the Tigers took care of business early, winning 5-of-6 opening sets. It was Marshall who tallied DePauw's fourth point, winning in straight-sets 6-3, 6-3, over Humphreys at No. 1 singles.
Wittwer picked up the deciding point for the Tigers, grabbing the opening set 6-3 and cruising to a 6-0 victory in the second set over Wallace at fourth-singles.
DePauw went a combined 10-0 in its regional matches, advancing to its first regional since the 2005-06 season where the Tigers dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Quarterfinal matches are slated to be played in Cincinnati, Ohio starting on May 18. DePauw will play the winner of the Williams vs. Babson/Skidmore match scheduled for Sunday.
