Tigers Bow out of NCAC Tournament to Hot-Shooting Bishops

Greencastle, Ind. - Fifth-seed Ohio Wesleyan shot 59.1 percent in the second half and made 7-of-10 three-pointers as it knocked off top-seed DePauw, 72-65, in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal.

DePauw, ranked seventh in the latest coaches' poll and eighth by D3hoops.com, dropped to 24-2 and had its 21-game season streak snapped as well as its 67-game regular season home string. DePauw awaits word on its postseason fate when the NCAA selection show airs Monday at 2:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.

The Bishops improved to 15-12 and face Wittenberg (22-6) in tomorrow's championship game after Wittenberg topped Denison (15-12), 76-72, in overtime.

DePauw led throughout much of the first half with its biggest margin coming at 31-25 with 1:37 remaining. DePauw headed to the break with a 31-28 lead.

The margin reached seven early in the second half on buckets by Savannah Trees and Hannah Douglas, but Ohio Wesleyan quickly turned that around as Sarah McQuade hit a pair of free throws and Taylor Dickson nailed consecutive three-pointers to give the Bishops a 36-35 lead with 15:52 remaining. 

Emily Julius canned back-to-back threes near the midway point of the half to give Ohio Wesleyan a 49-42 lead and the margin reached as much as 11 after Dickson's trey with 6:43 remaining made it 56-45.

Trees countered with a pair of jumpers to trim the gap to 56-49 before LaNiece McRae hit a pair of free throws. Trees drove through Bishops' defenders to cut the lead to 58-53 and Hannah Lukemeyer buried a jumper from the left side to make it a three-point game with 3:12 left.

Ohio Wesleyan missed on a three-point effort on its next possession and Trees knocked in a pair of free throws to cut the Bishops' lead to 58-57 with 2:24 left. Megan Kuether and Trees exchanged jumpers. but Julius extended the lead to four on a three-pointer with 1:20 remaining. 

The Tigers couldn't answer and McRae hit two more free throws to give Ohio Wesleyan a 65-59 advantage with 58 seconds left. 

Trees sank a pair of free throws on the Tigers' next trip down the floor, but that was matched by Dickson's jumper with 38 seconds left. After DePauw's Emma Ondik missed a three-pointer, Ohio Wesleyan missed the front end of a one-and-one  and Douglas was fouled. Her two charity tosses trimmed the Bishops' lead to 67-63 with 22 seconds left.

Hanna Fedorka made the first of two free throws just one second later, but Douglas' three was off the mark and Dickson put the game out of reach with a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining.

Trees matched a career-high with a game-high 26 and moved to just 15 points behind Amy Argetsinger's (2001-05) school career record of 1,447. Douglas followed with 11 and Ondik added 10. Trees also matched a career best with seven rebounds to lead the Tigers.

Julius paced Ohio Wesleyan with 17 points followed by McRae with 16, Dickson with 15 and Sarah McQuade with 13. McRae added a game-high 11 rebounds and McQuade dished out five assists.

DePauw shot 45 percent for the game, but were 0-of-6 in second-half three-pointers and 2-of-10 for the game. Meanwhile, Ohio Wesleyan connected on 46 percent from the floor after shooting just 35.7 percent in the first half including just 2-of-7 from three-point range.

The Tigers held a 35-29 rebounding edge and committed just nine turnovers, but had just six assists to the Bishops' 16.

In the evening's first semifinal game, second-seed Wittenberg and third-seed Denison battled through 14 ties and 15 lead changes in a game that included 59 fouls and 79 free throw attempts.

Wittenberg got out to as much as a nine-point lead in the first half on the way to a 31-26 margin at the break. Denison scored seven straight later in the second half to grab a 55-50 lead with 5:29 left. Wittenberg scored the next five and then needed a pair of Michelle Brunswick free throws with a few ticks less than three seconds remaining to force overtime.

The Tigers never trailed in the overtime and led by as many as five. Enri Small's two free throws with five seconds remaining sealed the win.

Darbie Zirkle led Wittenberg with 17 points, while Katelyn Haralamos followed with 15. Small added 14 and Heather Schroeder 12, while Brunswick snagged 16 rebounds.

Jordan Homes led Denison with 21 points and 13 rebounds with Kellie Arter and Mary Margaret Habel each totaling 15 and Gabrielle Nottage 11 along with five assists.
