Box Score Greencastle, Ind.- Ohio Wesleyan used 14 threes to defeat the DePauw men's basketball team by a final score of 86-77, Saturday afternoon in the Neal Fieldhouse.
DePauw closed out the regular season with a 16-9 overall record and a 9-9 mark in North Coast Athletic Conference play, while the 17th-ranked Bishops improved to 21-4 on the year and 16-2 in the NCAC. The Tigers will learn their conference tournament seeding when the bracket is released tomorrow, following the Wittenberg vs. Hiram contest.
Ohio Wesleyan took an early lead on a layup and three from Claude Gray. The Bishops would hold an 8-2 lead with 15:55 left in the half before the Tigers would begin to chip away.
Frank Patton III hit a three and Connor Rich grabbed a steal, leading to a layup from Michael Onuorah. Tommy Fernitz capped DePauw's 7-0 run with a layup at the 13:17 mark. The Tigers would continue to battle with the Bishops, taking a five-point lead on a pair of free-throws from Fernitz with 4:10 remaining.
Nick Felhaber hit a three with 3:26 in the half to tie the contest at 29-29. Ohio Wesleyan would hit four free-throws, separated by an Onuorah layup, to take a 33-31 lead at the halftime break.
A frantic first-half featured four ties and four lead changes as the Tigers shot 40.0 percent (12-of-30) from the floor, while the Bishops shot 10-of-29 (34.5%) in the half.
In the second-half, Gray made back-to-back layups to open up the Ohio Wesleyan lead to six. DePauw would use an 11-0 run over the next 4:24 to take a 42-39 lead. Onuorah bookended the run with a pair of layups, while Fernitz threw in a dunk and Bob Dillon netted a three during the stretch.
From the 12:31 mark to the 7:50 mark the game featured three ties and six lead changes. The turning point in the game came with 7:50 left as Gray stepped back and nailed a three while getting fouled. Gray sank the free-throw, putting the Bishops up 61-58.
Ohio Wesleyan built off this momentum and never looked back, extending their lead to as much as 14 before sealing the nine-point victory. The Bishops shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the floor, including a 57.7 percent (15-of-26) mark in the second-half.
Gray netted a game-high 26 points, while Felhaber added 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from three. Nate Axelrod totaled 16 points with eight assists and Ben Simpson had a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
Luke Lattner led DePauw, scoring 20 of his 22 points in the second-half. Fernitz added 14 points, while Patton III netted 11 points with five assists.
DePauw shot 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the floor, including a 54.5 percent (18-of-33) shooting mark in the second-half. The Tigers lost the battle on the glass 35-31 and shot just 9-of-15 (60.0%) from the charity stripe to Ohio Wesleyan's 22-of-25 (88.0%) free-throw numbers.
The Tigers outscored the Bishops 44-20 on points in the paint and held a sizeable advantage on bench points with a 35-8 margin.
