Tigers Nearly Erase 12-Point Deficit, but Blugold Hold on for Hasbrook Classic Win

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw cut a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to one, but Wisconsin-Eau Claire hit four free throws in the final 26 seconds to take a 55-50 win over the Tigers in the day's second game of the Amy Hasbrook Classic. In the opening game, Franklin defeated Heidelberg, 75-73, in overtime.

The teams battled through a tight first half as neither led by more than four with the Blugolds taking a 25-24 advantage at the break. 

Wisconsin-Eau Claire's lead was still one at 36-35 with less than four minutes left in the third, but the guests scored seven straight to close the period with a 43-35 lead.

Erin O'Toole's putback with 8:32 remaining in the fourth gave the Blugolds a 49-37 lead. Claire Ryan countered with a three-point play before Taylor Howard scooped in a layup underneath the defender's arms and Jenna Stoner knocked in a three to make it 49-44 with 6:54 left.

Abby Keller's jumper and Maya Howard's two free throws with 4:38 remaining cut the gap to 49-48 and capped an 11-0 run.

The teams exchanged baskets and DePauw had two chances to take the lead, but the Tigers missed four straight charity tosses. O'Toole nailed a pair with 26 seconds remaining before Teenie Lichtfuss made two with 12 seconds left.

Emily Budde led DePauw with 17 points, while Keller followed with 10. Budde, Keller and Stoner each had a team-best six rebounds, while Ryan handed out five assists.

Lichtfuss paced the Blugolds with 13 points, while Madison Johnson recorded a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds. O'Tooke sent back four of her team's six blocked shots.

DePauw shot just 35.7 percent for the game to Eau Claire's 44,0 percent and each team hit five three-pointers. The Blugolds held a 33-32 rebounding edge and led, 32-16, in points in the paint.

In the opening game, Heidelberg's Cassidy Frank sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer with three seconds left, but the Grizzlies never trailed in the extra session.

Tomorrow's predetermined matchups include Wisconsin-Eau Claire against Franklin at 2 p.m. and DePauw versus Heidelberg in the 4 p.m. game.
