Box Score St. Louis, Mo. - A 12-0 run midway through the second half lifted DePauw from a six-point deficit to a six-point lead, but Pomona-Pitzer scored seven straight in the closing minutes to take a 77-74 win over the Tigers in the third-place game of Washington University's Lopata Classic.
The Tigers trailed much of the first half and the Sagehens went to the break with a 39-35 advantage. DePauw trimmed the lead to 50-49 on David Vogel's three. Pomona-Pitzer extended the margin to 59-53 after Corbin Koch hit a pair of free throws with 10:11 left.
Luke Lattner responded with a three-pointer, while Cris Burrough followed with a layup before Bradley Fey knocked in a three to give DePauw a 61-59 lead. Lattner followed with a layup and Burrough capped the 12-0 run with a lay-in to give the Tigers a 65-59 lead.
DePauw was still up, 67-63 after Jacob Heller hit a free throw at the 5:04 mark, but Gibson FaroneCollins hit a jumper and Koch added a layup to even the score at 67-67 with 4:25 remaining.
Koch's jumper gave the Sagehens a 74-71 lead with 1:49 left before Lattner drew an offensive foul and hit one free throw to trim the lead to two. Pomona-Pitzer's Hunter Lowry countered with a three with 30 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 77-72.
Jack VandeMerkt's layup closed the lead to 77-74 and DePauw got the ball back after a Sagehens turnover, but Vogel's three-pointer was off the mark. The Tigers fouled and Pomona-Pitzer was unable to convert the front end of a one-and-one. Vogel's three as time expired hit the rim and bounced off.
Vogel, an all-tournament team selection, led DePauw with 13 points, while Andrew Kus added 11 and VandeMerkt 10. VandeMerkt grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double and Nate Jahn dished out six assists.
Daniel Rosebaum scored 29 for the Sagehens with Koch adding 19 and FaroneCollins with 11 and a team-high nine rebounds.
DePauw shot 45.3 percent from the field to Pomona-Pitzer's 44.3 percent and the Tigers knocked down 9-of-24 threes. The Tigers connected on just 7-of-14 free throws, while the Sagehens hit 18-of-21. DePauw also held a 41-34 edge on the boards.
The Tigers travel to Earlham on Tuesday, November 24, for a 2 p.m. game at Rose-Hulman.
