Denison Tops DePauw in NCAA Third-Round Thriller

May 14, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — In a match that came down to just the number-one singles match on the court, sixth-ranked Denison advanced to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals following a 5-4 win over #17 DePauw in the third round of the national tournament.

Denison scored the match's first point after its number-two doubles team of Kelsey Geppner and Alex Marcell defeated DePauw's Elizabeth Young and Meg Crowley by an 8-4 score.

The Big Red made it 2-0 when the number-one tandem of Kristin Cobb and Sarah Short topped Janelle Arita and Kelly Gebert, 8-3. DePauw trimmed the lead to 2-1 as its number-three doubles team of Tricia Wilks and Lizzy Whitlatch beat Kate Westenberger and Jane Lent, 8-5.

Singles play started outside but was moved indoors due to rain during the first set of each. Katie Regan of DePauw evened the score with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lilianna Broussalian at sixth singles. Denison's Westenberger gave her team a 3-2 advantage following a 6-2, 6-3 win at number-five singles over Young.

Marcell made it 4-2 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Crowley at fourth singles, but DePauw closed the gap to 4-3 when Gebert rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Short at the number-two slot.

Wilks then evened the score at 4-4 with a 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 win over Geppner and, just minutes later, Cobb wrapped up a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Arita.

Denison improved to 18-4, while the Tigers finished the season at 14-10. Arita and Gebert will represent DePauw at the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships with Arita competing in singles and the pair playing in doubles.
