November 27, 2011, St. Louis, Mo. — Katie Aldrich scored 19 and Kate Walker added 15 to lead DePauw to a 69-57 win over Washington-St. Louis in the championship game of the Washington Thanksgiving Classic.
The Tigers, ranked ninth in the Division III Coaches' preseason poll and 10th by D3hoops.com, improved to 3-1, while the Bears, ranked sixth by the coaches and seventh by D3hoops.com, dropped to 4-1. The win also snapped DePauw's four-game losing streak to the Bears on their home court as it was the Tigers first win there since the 1990-91 season.
The hosts led much of the first half and held as much as a six-point advantage at 15-9. DePauw used an 11-2 run late in the first half to take a 35-26 lead before the Bears closed the half with a three-pointer to cut the Tigers' halftime margin to 35-29.
Washington was within four at 37-33, but Aldrich hit back-to-back layups to extend the margin back to eight with 15:14 left. That lead reached 11 at 46-35 after the Tigers scored five straight, but the Bears' Claire Schaeperkoetter hit consecutive threes to close the gap to 46-41.
DePauw scored six straight later in the half for its biggest lead at 59-45 with just over six minutes left. The Bears got as close as 61-55 with just under two minutes remaining, but the Tigers hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
Ellie Pearson and Aldrich each grabbed seven rebounds as DePauw held a 37-30 advantage on the boards. Ali Ross and Kathryn Denbow each dished out two assists, while Ross recorded five steals. Walker hit 13-of-14 from the line as the Tigers connected on 28-of-34.
Melissa Gilkey led the Bears with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Kristin Anda added 12 points and Jordan Rettig 10. Gilkey blocked five shots in the loss.
DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, November 30, when it hosts Millikin at 8 p.m.
