Tigers Knock off Fourth-Ranked Petrels in Showdown of Nationally-ranked Squads

Mathews_Katie_200809wbb.jpgFebruary 20, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. —  DePauw, ranked 18th in Division III, built as much as a 22-point lead in the second half but had to fend off a late rally by fourth-ranked Oglethorpe on the way to a 92-86 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over the Stormy Petrels.

The Tigers improved to 20-4 overall and 11-2 in the SCAC with their 38th straight home win and 46th consecutive SCAC home victory. The win also gave DePauw its eighth straight 20-win season and 12th in the last 13 seasons. Oglethorpe dropped to 21-3 overall and 11-2 in the conference.

The teams were tied at 20-20 midway through the first half before the Tigers put together a 17-4 run to take a 37-24 lead with 6:25 left in the half. DePauw took a 51-34 lead into the intermission.

The Tigers pushed the lead to as many as 22 in the second half after Katie Mathews' (pictured) jumper with 13:23 left made it 70-48. Oglethorpe scored the next five to close the margin to 14, but DePauw eventually extended the lead to 84-64 after Cassie Pruzin buried a three with 5:07 left.

Rena Crossland and Katie Kulavic hit consecutive threes and Kulavic knocked in two free throws to close the gap to 84-72 with 3:32 left. Kulavic's three-point play and Hannah Brooks' layup at the 2:24 mark pulled the Stormy Petrels to within seven before Anna Findley's jumper capped the 15-0 run and made it 84-79 with just over two minutes left. During the stretch the Tigers missed all six field goal tries, while Oglethorpe hit all five of their attempts from the floor and all three free throws.

Andrea Travelstead stopped the run with a layup off of Emily Marshall's assist with 1:44 left, but Findley answered just 11 seconds later.

Mathews pushed the lead back to seven with 59 seconds remaining, but Oglethorpe's Biz Richmann nailed a three with 41 seconds left to make it 88-84. Pruzin hit two free throws with 34.7 seconds left and Tina Grace closed the lead back to 90-86 on a layup with 15.8 seconds left.

After an Oglethorpe timeout, the Stormy Petrels tied the Tigers up with 12.4 seconds remaining but the possession arrow went in favor of DePauw. Pruzin then hit a pair of charity tosses with 6.5 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Mathews led the Tigers with 21 points, while Pruzin followed with 16. Marshall notched a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds including eight on the offensive glass. Travelstead rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10. Pruzin's late three-pointer was the 222nd of her career which broke the DePauw record of 221 held by Kelly Morrison (1995-99)

Findley paced Oglethorpe with 30 points, while Grace added 19. Kulavic followed with 14 and Richmann scored 10.

DePauw shot 42.5 percent for the game to Oglethorpe's 50 percent, but the Tigers committed just nine turnovers and outrebounded the Stormy Petrels 44-36. Oglethorpe hit 10-of-23 three-pointers.

The Tigers round out the home portion of the regular season when they host Sewanee at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
