Seventh-ranked Tigers Drop Overtime Game at Thomas More

Marshall_Emily_200809wbb.jpgNovember 28, 2009, Crestview Hills, Ky. —  Katie Mathews' jumper with 20 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, but Thomas More scored the first five points of overtime and held on for a 70-67 win over seventh-ranked DePauw.

The Tigers dropped to 2-2, while the Saints improved to 3-0 in the second game of the Julie Costello Memorial Classic. DePauw faces Manchester at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Mathews and Emily Marshall (left) each matched career highs with 22 and 20 points, respectively, while Marshall posted a double-double with a game-high 17 rebounds.

Nicole Dickman led Thomas More with 19 points and 10 rebounds followed by Allison Long with 17 points and Dana Bors with 11.

The Saints jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the opening 3:21, but DePauw answered with a 13-0 run to take a 13-11 lead with 12:38 left in the first half. Following the half's third tie at 17-17, Thomas More scored 11 straight to push the margin back to 11 on the way to a 28-20 halftime lead.

DePauw quickly trimmed the Saints' lead to four in the opening two minutes of the second half, but Thomas More's second-half advantage reached double digits again at 42-32. The Saints still led 48-40 after Long's layup, but the Tigers put together a 10-1 run capped by Marshall's two free throws which gave DePauw a 50-49 lead with 4:24 remaining in regulation.

Thomas More grabbed a 56-54 lead after Long scored on a layup with 1:37 left. The Tigers couldn't convert, but the Saints turned the ball over leading to Mathews' game-tying jumper. The Saints missed two potential game-winning shots in the final seconds.

The hosts scored the first five points of the overtime session, but DePauw scored four straight to close to within one with just under two minutes left. Dickman's layup and a pair of free throws by Dana Bors pushed the Saints' lead back to 65-61 with 37 seconds left.

Mathews hit a three with 20 seconds left to close the Thomas More lead to 67-65. Long nailed 1-of-2 free throws to make it 68-65. The Tigers missed a potential game-tying three-point attempt in the closing seconds, but Marshall grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. Her two free throws with four seconds left trimmed the lead to 68-67, but Bors hit two free throws with two seconds left.

DePauw held a 48-38 edge on the boards, but connected on just 2-of-10 shots in the overtime. The Tigers shot 35.1 percent from the floor, while the Saints connected on 39.7 percent.
