Late Free Throw Sends Third-Ranked Tigers to Opening Night Loss

November 21, 2008, St. Louis, Mo. - Illinois Wesleyan's Hope Schulte hit a free throw with one second left which gave the 10th-ranked Titans a 77-76 win over third-ranked DePauw.

DePauw held a 76-73 lead after Brianna Frigerio scored with 2:08 left. Illinois Wesleyan knotted the score on Mallory Heydorn's three-pointer with 36 seconds remaining.

The Tigers turned the ball over with 15 seconds left before Heydorn failed to convert on a layup with six seconds remaining. DePauw's Emily Marshall grabbed the rebound and was fouled but the Titans weren't in the bonus yet and the Tigers were awarded the ball.

Schulte stole the inbounds pass and was fouled while driving to the basket. She made the second of two free throws to give the Titans the win.

DePauw jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Titans put together a 20-4 run to take a 20-9 lead just seven minutes into the contest. The Tigers scored 10 straight later in the half and regained the lead, but Illinois Wesleyan went to the break with a 43-36 lead.

Illinois Wesleyan extended the margin to 10 on three occasions before the Tigers scored nine conseuctive points to close to 52-51 with 12:35 left. DePauw took its first lead of the half on Marshall's layup with 7:28 remaining and led by as may as three twice.

Cassie Pruzin led the Tigers with 19 points followed by Andrea Travelstead with 12 and Katie Aldrich with 10. Heydorn scored 21 for the Titans followed by Schulte with 17, Christina Solari with 16 and Claire Sheehan with 12.

DePauw shot 45.8 percent from the floor to the Titans' 45.6 percent, but Illinois Wesleyan hit 11 of 22 from three-point range to the Tigers' 6 of 11. The Tigers outrebounded Illinois Wesleyan, 40-24 as Marshall grabbed 10, but DePauw committed 23 turnovers which the Titans convertedinto 30 points.

The Tigers face Central in the third-place game on Saturday. Washington-St. Louis topped the Dutch by a 90-48 score in the evening's second game. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CST with WGRE carrying the game. Live video is also available along with live stats.
