Turnovers contribute to SCAC loss at Millsaps

Box Score

October 21, 2006, Jackson, Miss. - Visiting DePauw committed five turnovers and Millsaps took advantage in a 31-7 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win.

The Tigers dropped to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the SCAC, while the Majors improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Millsaps converted DePauw's five interceptions into 17 points and scored on all four red zone opportunities, while the Tigers were unable to capitalize on either Millsaps turnover and were just 1-of-3 in the red zone.

The Majors jumped out to a 7-0 lead on their first possession as they took 10 plays to cover 44 yards with quarterback Juan Joseph scoring on a 2-yard keeper just 5:17 into the contest.

The Tigers knotted the score on the next series when Spud Dick tossed a 9-yard scoring pass to Stephen Horrighs with 4:14 left in the first. The score capped a 10-play, 78-yard series in which Dick completed seven of eight passes.

Late in the first the Tigers recovered a Millsaps fumble at the Majors' 41 and drove to the Millsaps 21. The Tigers couldn't convert, however, as Abe Winkle's third-down pass was picked off by Marcus Harris at the Millsaps 15.

The Majors then embarked on a 19-play, 84-yard scoring drive which they kept alive with a fourth-down conversion from the DePauw 19. The Tigers' defense stopped the Majors at the DePauw 4 and Millsaps called upon its field goal unit.

The Majors, though, called for a fake and kicker Sam Herman took the pitch from the holder and ran it in for a 4-yard score. Herman's point-after made it 14-7 with 5:12 left in the half.

The Tigers wasted little time during the ensuing series as they drove to the Millsaps 17 in the closing minutes of the half, but Michael Sims picked off Winkle and ended DePauw's threat.

DePauw's J.J. Costello picked off Joseph's pass early in the third, but five plays later Harris recorded his second interception of the game and took it 49 yards down the sideline for a score that made it 21-7 with 10:14 remaining in the third.

The Majors pushed the lead to 28-7 later in the third on Tyson Roy's 2-yard run and capped off the scoring with Herman's 27-yard field goal with 8:03 left in the contest.

Millsaps outgained the Tigers 335-309 including a 234-191 edge through the air. Jeremiah Marks rushed for 90 yards on 16 carries, while Roy totaled 76 in 15 attempts for the Majors.

Joseph completed 28 of 43 passes for 234 yards, while Dick was 13 of 20 for 123 yards and Winkle was 12 of 20 for 68 yards. Chris Jackson paced Millsaps with 10 catches for 77 yards, while Burt Pereira caught eight for 82 yards. Chris Gasbarra led the Tigers with six catches for 36 yards.

Eric Lewis paced the DePauw defense with 11 tackles, while Greg Sylvester added eight. Shawn Gillenwater led Millsaps with eight tackles and two interceptions, while Harris added seven stops and a pair of interceptions as well.

DePauw travels to Centre next Saturday for its final SCAC road game of the season, while Millsaps travels to Sewanee next week.
