Tigers earn SCAC's number-one seed with 65-50 win at Sewanee

Sewanee, Tenn. - The 10th-ranked DePauw women's basketball team wrapped up the top seed in the SCAC Championship by defeating host Sewanee 65-50. DePauw improved to 22-3 overall and 13-1 in SCAC play with its 12th straight victory. Sewanee dropped to 11-13 overall and 7-7 in the conference.

 

DePauw finished the SCAC regular season tied for first with Trinity, but won the tiebreaker for the top seed by virtue of its February 8 win at Trinity. The Tigers open SCAC quarterfinal play on Friday, February 27, when they face Oglethorpe at 6 p.m. CST. at Memphis University School.

 

Sewanee scored the game's first four points, but DePauw quickly gained control by scoring 16 straight points. The lead reached as many as 13 late in the half before the Tigers went to the break with a 29-19 advantage.

 

The hosts closed to within seven in the first four minutes of the second half, but DePauw scored 13 consecutive points to take a 20-point lead. That margin was as great as 22, but never in single digits.

 

DePauw's Sarah Zondor led all scorers with 20 points including 18 in the first half.  Colleen Powers added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  Danielle Pettay paced Sewanee with 12 points with Sarah Harder adding 11. Sally Jackson grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. DePauw held a 35-28 advantage on the boards.
