GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Tiger women's basketball team won for the fifth straight time and improved to 18-4 overall and 13-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 72-53 win at Southwestern University. The Pirates slipped to 7-14 overall and 5-9 in the SCAC.
Four players scored in double figures for the 13th-ranked Tigers led by Meredith Miles with 14 and Sarah MacKay with 12. Kim Weigle and Lindsey Rush each added 11. Dana Ferguson grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds in the win. Heather Johnson paced the Pirates with 16 points. DePauw outrebounded Southwestern 43-26.
A first half that included five ties and 12 lead changes was one of frustration for the Tigers who committed 13 turnovers. However, behind 52 percent shooting from the floor over the opening 20 minutes DePauw took a 34-31 lead into the break after Sarah MacKay hit a three-pointer with four seconds left.
DePauw stretched the lead to six at 41-35, but Southwestern scored five straight to close to within one at 41-40. A pair of buckets from Meredith Miles and a three-pointer by Rush pushed the lead to 48-40 with 11:28 remaining. The Tigers then scored 14 of the next 18 to cap off a 22-4 run and put the game away.
The win, coupled with Sewanee's loss at Oglethorpe, gave the Tigers a two-game lead in the loss column with three to play.
DePauw hosts Rose-Hulman on Thursday at 6 p.m.
