Senior Joe Nixon scored 17 in the first half on the way to a game-high 27 points in the Tigers' 90-62 win over Oberlin.
GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The 16th-ranked Tigers (3-0) jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never trailed on the way to a 90-62 win over visiting Oberlin (0-3). The 3-0 start is the Tigers' best since they opened the 1997-98 season with three victories.
The game started in unusual fashion as Oberlin was called for a technical foul for hanging on the rim in the pre-game. Jeremy Bettis connected on both free throws before the opening tip. Joe Nixon then hit a pair of three-pointers before Mike Howland added a jumper and Nixon scored on a layup to give the Tigers a 12-0 lead just 2:08 into the contest.
The Tigers pushed the lead to 13 at 20-7, but the Yeomen went on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 22-17 with 11:30 left in the half. Oberlin got as close as four at 25-21 on Cameron Levrett's three-point play, but DePauw scored the next seven points including an ally-oop dunk by Bettis on an assist from Nixon.
The lead was 44-31 at the break after it had reached 15 points on two occasions. Nixon led all scorers over the opening 20 minuts with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting in 16 minutes.
DePauw led 53-39 early in the second half, but a 12-4 run that started with two free throws from Joe Ringger and ended with 10 straight points from Nixon extended the Tigers' lead to 65-43 midway through the second half.
The Tigers' biggest lead was 28 with 7:45 left and again in the final minute.
Nixon recorded game-high totals of 27 points and seven rebounds to lead four DePauw double-figure scorers. Howland and Ringger each scored 16 and Bettis added 13. Chris Ipkoh scord 20 for the Yeomen.
DePauw travels to Wabash for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Monday, November 26.
GAME NOTES: The win was the Tigers' 29th in their last 34 games at the Neal Fieldhouse. They raised their all-time record in the building to 204-37 since the first game in February 1982 ... Bill Fenlon's 146 wins at DePauw is just three shy of tying Donovan Moffett's 149 which ranks second in school history behind Elmer McCall's 182 ... DePauw's 3-0 start is their best since the 1997-98 season when they also won their first three. The last 4-0 start came in 1993-94.
