ST. LOUIS, MO — Preseason injuries sidelined three key players for Kris Huffman's Tigers, but the team's depth showed on Friday night as they knocked off Illinois Wesleyan 70-55 in the first game of the Washington University Tipoff Tournament.
Senior forward Amy Hasbrook scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Tigers who now take on two-time defending national champion Washington at 4 p.m. CST (5 p.m. in Greencastle) in today's championship game. The Bears, winners of their last 39 games, defeated Beloit 114-47 in Friday's second game.
DePauw trailed early by three points before going ahead to stay on four points each from sophomore guard Katie Imborek and Hasbrook. The lead reached as many as 13 late in the half and was 34-21 at the break.
That margin reached as many as 20 points at 47-27 in the first six minutes of the second half, but the Titans scored 10 straight including eight points from Melissa Glerum in a 2:32 span to close the gap to 10 with 10:45 left in regulation.
Illinois Wesleyan got as close as eight at 49-41 with eight minutes left before the Tigers scored six straight to put it away.
Senior Jamie Selip finished with 16 which was just one shy of equaling her career high. Dona Haskett added 10 points and eight boards. Cindy Uphoff paced Illinois Wesleyan with 13 points. The Tigers held a 37-21 advantage on the boards and both teams shot 50 percent from the floor.
The win was the Tigers' 17th straight in regular season play.
Senior forward Amy Hasbrook scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Senior guard Jamie Selip scored 16 points in the Tigers' win.
