The Tigers ended the 1997-98 season on Thursday evening, but not without a fight as they lost in the first round of the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, 89-76. The Grizzlies got the lead early to double figures and kept it there most of the first half and led by as many as 15 on the way to a 46-34 halftime lead. The hosts led by as many as 23 in the second half before a late surge brought the Tigers to the final deficit of 13 points. The Tigers placed five in double figures led by Dave Gifford's 15 and Craig Stewart's 13. Corey Yost followed with 12, Bob Steiner 11 and Brad Stevens 10. Jason Sibley led Franklin with 26 points. The Tigers shot 49 percent for the game which was their best shooting effort since January 4, but the Grizzlies connected on 56 percent.
The Tigers trailed by just four at halftime, but the host Saints and their full-court press wore the Tigers down in the second half. Corey Yost led the Tigers with 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds. The Tigers travel to Franklin on Thursday for a first round game in the ICAC tournament.
The Tigers trailed host Manchester by just three at halftime, but the Spartans opened the half with a 12-2 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to take a 13-point lead. The Tigers got no closer than 10 the rest of the way. Lars Matzerath equaled his career high with 11 points and also led the Old Gold with six rebounds. Antwann Jones led Manchester with 20 points and seven rebounds. Manchester shot 60 percent from the field in the second half including 83 percent (5-of-6) from three-point range. The Tigers travel to Thomas More on Monday and then open ICAC tournament play at Franklin on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The young DePauw Tigers battled Wabash at the Neal Fieldhouse, but didn't have enough firepower to handle the Little Giants. Wabash took a 67-53 victory. The Tigers trailed by just two at halftime, but Chad Tabor and Josh Estelle combined for 28 of Wabash's 37 points in the second half to lead the visitors to victory. Tabor finished with 27 and Estelle added 14, all in the second half. Dave Gifford and Jess McKinney led the Tigers with nine each.
Jess McKinney scored a career-high 30 points and tied the DePauw single-game record with eight three-pointers, but Anderson placed four in double figures and shot 64 percent in the second half on the way to a 92-83 win. As a team, the Tigers hit 16 of 32 from three-point range. The 16 three-pointers made ties a school and ICAC record. Craig Stewart chipped in with 16 points.
The Tigers built as much as a nine-point lead in the second half and still led by as many as six with just over 11 minutes left, but visiting Rose-Hulman went on an 18-2 run to take a 10-point lead with just over four minutes left. Bryan Egli of the Engineers led all scorers with 32. He also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Jess McKinney led DePauw with 19 and Brad Stevens scored 17. The Tigers outrebounded Rose-Hulman 38-23 with Sylvester Harvey grabbing seven.
The Tigers shot just 34.8 percent from the field and were outrebounded 36-28 on the way to a 57-49 home loss to Hanover College. Brad Stevens led the Tigers with nine points and Sylvester Harvey grabbed six rebounds. Micah Shrewsberry led Hanover with 13 points.

Jess McKinney established a career high for the third straight game with 24 points at Wabash, but the Little Giants took the 82-65 decision at a packed Chadwick Court. Jack Kidd added 10 points and nine rebounds. Chad Tabor paced Wabash with 23.
After a poor shooting first half, the Tigers gain the lead in the second half only to have Manchester go on a 9-0 run late in the game to take control. Only four Tigers scored led by Jess McKinney's career-high 22 and Bob Steiner's career-best 14. Each scored career highs on Wednesday also. Steiner and McKinney combined to nail seven of 11 from three-point range and got the Tigers to a four-point lead in the second half. However, the Old Gold couldn't contain the Manchester inside game. Antwann Jones led Manchester with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Chad Berry and Chanse Young each added 16. Manchester outrebounded DePauw 34-15.
The Tigers hist nine of 10 free throws in overtime and outscored host Hanover 16-12 in the extra session to defeat Hanover, 69-65 in an ICAC contest. Jess McKinney led the Tigers with 17 including an NBA distance three-pointer in OT that put the Old Gold up by six.
It was just what the doctor ordered for the Tigers as they built a large lead early and held on to defeat Anderson 74-52. The Tigers used a 17-2 run during the middle stages of the first half to build a 17-point lead. The Old Gold committed just two turnovers in the first 20 minutes in building a 37-20 lead. That advantage reached as much as 26 in the second half. Jess McKinney led the Tigers with 13 points, while Jack Kidd hauled down nine rebounds.
An 18-0 run by host Rose-Hulman over a 4:35 stretch early in the second half propelled the Engineers to a 24-point lead and they never looked back in taking a 70-52 ICAC win. Jess McKinney and Craig Stewart each scored 10 points in the loss. Bryan Egli led Rose-Hulman with 27 points.
Craig Stewart's shot at the buzzer was off the mark and the Tigers lost to High Point, 58-55. Stewart finished with 18 and was named to the all-tournament team.
The Tigers jumped out to a 16-4 advantge and led by as many as 23 in the second half on the way to a 79-64 win over Drew at the Great Bahamas Goombay Shootout. Lars Matzerath and Jess McKinney each scored 10 to lead the Old Gold to its seventh straight win. Matzerath also hauled down eight rebounds. The Tigers play High Point on Monday.
Jack Kidd and Corey Yost each scored 17 and Kidd added 11 boards to boost the Tigers to an 82-60 win over Elmira in the first game of the Great Bahamas Goombay Shootout. The Tigers trailed 5-2, but used an 18-1 run to jump ahead. The Tigers play Drew on Sunday afternoon.
The 7-1 Tigers are among the top 12 teams in the Midwest Region according to the first poll released on December 16. DePauw is one of three Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference schools ranked. The Tigers host one of the South Region's top-ranked teams in the Savannah College of Art and Design on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Tigers fell behind 12-2 to the Savannah College of Art and Design, but rallied with a 34-4 run over an 11-minute stretch of the first half to take a 20-point lead. The Bees scored the first six points of the second half and eventually got as close as three before Brad Stevens knocked down a pair of free throws with four seconds left to give the Old Gold a 65-60 win. The Tigers are 8-1 for their best start since 1986-87.
The Tigers' defense once again got the job done and shut down the opposition. This time Indiana Wesleyan was the victim by a 62-47 count. Sylvester Harvey and Brad Stevens each came off the bench to score 12 points for the Old Gold.

The Tigers put on the defensive clamps to topple Albion College, 57-49, in the opening game of the Coca-Cola/Kroger Classic at Franklin College. Josh Burch scored a career-high 12 points and Craig Stewart added 11 points and five steals to lead the Tigers. The Tiger defense was largely responsible for Albion's 26 turnovers.

The Tigers led by 13 at the half and held off the Vikings. The Tigers were 32 of 40 from the free throw line led by Stevens' 12-for-12 performance and Kidd's 12-for-15 showing. The Tigers open ICAC play on Tuesday with a home game against Franklin at 7:30 p.m.
Corey Yost scored 19 points including 12 during a 16-4 run that propelled the Tigers from a six-point deficit to a six-point lead in the second half. The Tigers held on for the 72-71 win over the defending Division III champions.
The Tigers held on for a 66-65 win over Centre College in the first round of the DePauw Tipoff Tournament. The Tigers will take on defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the championship game. The Titans were 76-63 winners over Washington University in the first game.
