GREENCASTLE,IND.-- K.C. Hammond's layup with nine seconds left broke a 55-55 deadlock and gave the visiting Millikin Big Blue a 57-55 win. DePauw had one more chance, but a turnover with two seconds left put an end to the Tigers' hopes. The Tigers fell to 8-4 with the loss and Millikin improved to 10-0.
The Tigers played a poor first half with 18 turnovers against full-court pressure from the Big Blue, shot just 30 percent from the floor and trailed at the break 30-22. Millikin held an 11-point lead before Ann Hall completed a three-point play with 20 seconds left.
Hall jump started the Tigers' offense in the second half as she scored the Old Gold's first 11 points of the second half to cut the deficit to 35-33 with 14:19 left.
Kelly Morrison, held scoreless in the first half, gave the Tigers the lead with a pair of jumpers in less than a 30-second span. Missy Barrett's jumper with 8:15 left tied the score at 37-37 and ended a 6-0 Tiger run that covered 6:49.
Hall's jumper with 4:14 left gave the Tigers a 49-44 lead which was their largest of the game. The Tigers still led by four with 2:49 left before Hammond nailed a three-pointer at the 2:31 mark to cut the DePauw lead to 52-51. Kelly Morrison scored on a layup at the 2:05 mark to put the Tigers back up by three.
Hammond's jumper with 1:49 left and Kayla Gwaltney's layup with 24 seconds remaining made it 55-54 in favor of the Big Blue. Kelly Bailey was fouled with 18 seconds left and hit the second of two free throws to tie the score at 55-55 before the Big Blue scored the game-winner nine seconds later.
Hall led the Tigers with 24, while Morrison had 15. Bailey grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Hammond led Millikin with 14 points and Amy Kleinwachter grabbed 11 boards.
The Tigers travel to Hanover on Tuesday to open their final season of Indiana Collegiate Athletic conference play. DePauw and Hanover shared the crown last year with Hanover winning the conference tournament.
