COMPLETE BOX SCORE
GREENCASTLE, IND.-- It by no means was one of the better games the Tigers have played, but they'll definitely take the 74-56 win over Kalamazoo that gave them their third DePauw Invitational title in as many years.
The Tigers committed 21 turnovers and shot just 38 percent from the floor, but outrebounded the Hornets 51-27, grabbed 22 offensive rebounds and made it to the free throw line 39 times.
The slow start saw the Tigers fall behind 9-4. The Tigers caught the guests at 13 and held the lead briefly before the Hornets regained it at 18-17 with 6:08 left in the first. Kelly Morrison's trey broke a 22-22 deadlock with 3:18 left, but Kelly LaCosse nailed back-to-back baskets to put the Hornets back up by one with 1:49 remaining.
The turning point in the contest may very well have come over the final 1:09 as the Tigers reeled off seven straight points. Kelly Bailey scored off an offensive rebound to regain the lead for the Old Gold, but the visitors couldn't capitalize on their putback at the other end and Bailey came back down for another bucket to make it 29-26. Kalamazoo missed a pair of shots and Morrison was able to bury a triple with just three seconds left to make it 32-26 at the break.
The Tigers stretched the lead to 10 on a pair of Ann Hall baskets at the beginning of the second half to cap off an 11-0 run. The Hornets closed the gap to 36-32 with six straight of their own, but the Tigers eventually got the margin to double digits on Dona Haskett's layup with 9:36 left and kept it there the remainder of the game.
Hall and Jamie Selip each scored 11, while Kelly Bailey added a game-high 15 rebounds. Haskett also had 13 boards in the contest. Kelly LaCosse led Kalamazoo with 19, followed by MaryJane Valade with 15 and Kelly Kearney with 14.
The Tigers improved to 6-2, while Kalamazoo fell to 2-5. DePauw now breaks for final exams, but returns to action on January 2nd at the Great Goombay Shootout against Graceland.
Eureka won the consolation game by defeating Dominican (Ill.) 57-53.
