Rose-Hulman Comes from Behind for 21-20 Win over DePauw

October 14, 1995, Greencastle, Ind. - Rose-Hulman quarterback Todd Harris (Sr., Carlisle/Sullivan) and wide receiver Eric Gappa (Sr., Knox/North Judson) teamed for touchdown passes of nine and two yards, respectively, as the visiting Engineers came back from a 14-0 deficit to defeat DePauw 21-20 in an Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference game. With the win, Rose-Hulman improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the ICAC. DePauw fell to 2-4 and 0-3 in the ICAC.

DePauw built a 14-0 lead on an eight-yard first-quarter run by freshman running back John Stigall (Oxford,  Ohio) and a 16-yard scamper in the second by senior fullback Mark Melchiorre (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy). The Engineers countered with the first touchdown pass from Harris to Gappa with just 29 seconds left in the first half. Midway through the third quarter, the Engineers' fullback Stuart Quay (Jr., Frederick, Md./Gov. Johnson) fumbled after a pickup of 10 yards, but the ball was recovered by tight end David Carnell (So., Indianapolis/Manual) in the end zone for a score. Sean Phillips' (Sr., Elkhart/Memorial) extra point knotted the score at 14-14 with 6:48 left in the third.

DePauw came right back as Stigall scored on a 21-yard run with 2:24 left in the third. The Engineers' winning drive started at their own 43-yard line and was capped off with the two-yard pass from Harris to Gappa.

DePauw outgained Rose-Hulman 366-295 and held Division III's second leading ground attack to 242 yards (nearly 100 below their average of 339.9). Fullback Jason Tolle led the Engineers with 87 yards rushing on 12 carries, while Stuart Quay totaled 64 yards on 10 tries. DePauw was paced by 100-yard performances by Stigall with a career-high 152 yards on 24 carries and Melchiorre with 125 yards on 21 attempts.

Rose-Hulman defensive end Matt Allen (Jr., Avon, Ohio/Avon) recorded four tackles for losses totaling 14 yards including 1.5 sacks.
