Ben Hewitt

Ben Hewitt began his tenure as DePauw’s head women’s swimming and diving coach in 2013.  Hewitt served as the assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach at Division II Nova Southeastern University for three seasons prior to joining the Tigers' staff. 

Hewitt led the 2015-16 Tigers to a 19th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships including a pair of top-four all-America swims by junior Angela Newlon. The Tigers placed third in the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships and broke school records in 10 events during the year. 

The 2014-15 Tigers finished 14th at the Division III Championships for their best national showing since 2008. Newlon collected all-America honors as well as the 800 free relay. DePauw also placed third in the NCAC Championships.

In 2013-14, Hewitt led the Tigers to a third-place finish at the NCAC Championships and a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Division III meet. Additionally, individuals broke seven school records and four of the five DePauw relays set new school records. At the NCAA Championships, the Tigers earned one All-America and four honorable mention All-America accolades.

He coached and mentored student-athletes who won three conference championships, twice finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Division II Championships.  Additionally, individuals earned three NCAA titles and 24 all-America honors with one student-athlete representing his country in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Prior to coming to Nova Southeastern, Hewitt served as an assistant at Wabash College (2005, 09) and Kenyon College (2006).  While at Wabash, Hewitt worked directly with three training groups and was in charge of designing comprehensive workout programs.  In addition, he was involved in recruiting activities including coordinating and planning multi-faceted recruiting events.

While at Kenyon, Hewitt dealt with workout development and multimedia interactions.  Furthermore, he helped coach the men to their 28th NCAA Division III title and the women to their 21st.

A native of Greenwood, Indiana, Hewitt received his bachelors of arts from Wabash College in 2005 where he was a four-year member of the Little Giant Swimming and Diving team.  As a student, Hewitt was an All-Conference performer and served as team captain in his senior season.  He was named MVP his junior year and received the mental attitude award twice during his time on campus.

The College Swim Coaches Association of America named Hewitt the 2013 recipient of the Jean Freeman Scholarship.  This scholarship is given annually to an assistant coach in each NCAA division who displays exceptional characteristics of leadership, integrity, honesty, competitive attitude and personal graciousness.
