Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw women's soccer shutout Wittenberg 2-0 Wednesday night at Reavis Stadium, collecting their first conference win of the season.
Tigers versus Tigers, DePauw held an edge in the first period in shots 7-3 and came out on top in the 26th minute when a corner kick led to the first goal of the night. Freshman defender Aryana Ali made contact with the ball following a scramble in front of the net. Freshman midfielder Joie Carpenter connected with the ball, kicking with her right foot into the net for her third goal of the season.
Heading into halftime DePauw held possession 61% of the first 45-minutes, 24% of which was in the attacking quadrant. Their only corner put them ahead 1-0 going into the second half.
The second goal came in the 83rd minute when DePauw Tigers drew a free kick. Carpenter came back to feed the ball to senior midfielder Sara Jacobi after applying pressure to Wittenberg's defense in the penalty box.
Recording three points on the day, Carpenter moved to tie junior Katherine Lacy for second on the team with seven points on the season. Jacobi leads the Tigers with 10 points, five goals and a .417 shooting percentage.
With 90-minutes in goal, senior goalkeeper Aubree Empie made three saves between the posts while Wittenberg's goalie made five saves, allowing two goals.
6-5-1 (1-0-1) on the season so far, women's soccer will return to action Saturday, October 10th at 3:00 p.m. on the road against Wooster for a conference match up.
