University Heights, Ohio - DePauw overcame a 14-point second half deficit and knocked off John Carroll by a 68-64 count. The Tigers improved to 13-7 overall and 6-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while the Blue Streaks dropped to 15-5 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
The game went back-and-forth for much of the first half until John Carroll went on a 9-1 run to take a 33-21 lead with 5:48 left. DePauw scored the next five to cut the deficit to seven before the Blue Streaks took a 37-28 lead into the intermission.
The hosts quickly pushed the lead to 14 at 42-28, but a quick DePauw counter with
Caleb Washington hitting two free throws and
Joe Smith knocking down a three brought the deficit back to single digits.
A John Carroll free throw pushed the lead back to 10 before
Reph Stevenson hit two free throws and Washington added a couple of buckets to trim the John Carroll advantage to 43-39 with 13:26 left.
The Tigers were within one point on several occasions before Washington completed a three-point play to even the count at 61-61 with 2:15 remaining.
The Blue Streaks missed a couple of chances on the offensive end, but the Tigers turned it over. John Carroll, however, wasn't able to capitalize and Smith buried a three with 45 seconds left to give the Tigers a 64-61 lead.
John Carroll missed on its next two possessions which sandwiched a DePauw missed free throw before Smith hit two more charity tosses with seven seconds left to push the lead to 66-61.Â
Luke Chicone's trey with four seconds left made it a two-point game but Smith sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
Sam Jacobs led DePauw with 16 points, while Washington and Smith each finished with 13. Stevenson grabbed 14 rebounds and Kunka hauled down 10.
Chicone led John Carroll with 26 points and six assists with Mike Laminrand chipping in 12 points. Sean Collins snagged nine rebounds and totaled three steals.
DePauw shot 44 percent for the game including 50 percent in the second half. The Tigers knocked in 20-of-25 free throws and held a 45-27 rebounding edge. The Blue Streaks connected on 33.3 percent from the field and committed just three turnovers to DePauw's 18.
The Tigers travel to Wittenberg on Wednesday, Feb. 4 for a 5:30 p.m. NCAC game.
