Granville, Ohio - DePauw stifled Wittenberg in game three of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, 5-2.
#4 Wittenberg came in hot after dethroning #1 Denison, 7-1. DePauw prepared to meet the opposing Tigers by starting off on a high note, matching competitive energy.
In a slight change of batting order,
Libby Minobe led off at the plate for the Tigers. She walked before stealing second.
Macey Cox knocked a ground to short stop, advancing Minobe to third.
Katie Mathies launched a sacrifice fly into center field, bringing in Minobe for the first run of the game.
In the top of the third, Wittenberg responded with a similar situation. Top of the lineup, Meghan McCans singled to get on base before stealing second and third and being driven home by a sacrifice fly, tying up the score 1-1.
DePauw applied pressure immediately,
Hanna Coffel drew a fielding error to get on base in the bottom of the third.
Erin Smith singled and Minobe followed with another to load the bases.
Callie Rheinheimer pinch hit for
Macey Cox, launching a sacrifice fly into right field to drive in two more runs for the Tigers. Mathies immediately followed with a grounder to third to bring in Minobe, stretching their lead 4-1.
In the next inning, DePauw capitalized on Wittenberg's shifting defense to draw a fielding error that allowed
Paige Brady to score the Tigers last run of the evening.
By the top of the 7th, Wittenberg drew a sense of urgency and Diana Quevado led off with a strong single up the middle. She stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. A sacrifice bunt drew Quevado home for Wittenberg's second run of the game. With two outs, DePauw shut down any potential two out rally with the final out of the game.
Paige Brady led DePauw offensively with two hits while
Libby Minobe tallied two runs on the board for the Tigers.
Callie Rheinheimer and
Katie Mathies both recorded two RBI.
Wittenberg's Diana Quevado tallied three hits in the game.
Izzy Deveau walked away with a win in the circle, making her record 4-2.
The Tigers will return to action tomorrow in the double-elimination tournament when they take on the Denison-Wittenberg winner at 1:30. Denison lost their first match against Wittenberg, 7-1 before defeating Hiram, while DePauw remains undefeated in post season play.
