Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw clinched a share of its fifth straight North Coast Athletic Conference title with a sweep of Hiram by scores of 3-2 and 9-1. The Tigers improved to 21-11 overall and 12-0 in the NCAC, while the Terriers dropped to 20-12 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
In the opener, Hiram took a 1-0 lead in the third as Ari Torres led off with a double, moved to third on Danielle Robles' grounder and scored when Fayth Kawamura singled.
DePauw evened the score in the bottom of the third as
Macey Cox singled with one out and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Libby Minobe singled with Cox moving to third before
Katie Mathies scored Cox with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Tigers took the lead in the fifth when
Hanna Coffel reached on an error and Cox walked before Minobe singled, but Cox was hit by the ball on the play. Minobe then stole second before Mathies drove both in with a single to center.
Daynna Mekaru led off the Hiram sixth with a single and moved to third on Darian Kanno's double. Hanna Marlow then hit a fly ball to center that
Ella Kuenster snatched from clearing the fence with only Mekaru scoring. A ground out ended the inning.
The Terriers had two singles in the seventh, but a strikeout to end the game gave the Tigers the win.
Cox and Minobe each had two of DePauw's seven hits with Mathies driving in all three. Kawamura and Torres each had two of Hiram's eighth hits.
Izzy Deveau improved to 3-2, while Kanno dropped to 13-2.
In the second game, Mathies put DePauw on the board first with a solo homer in the first.
Riley Heim made it 4-0 in the fourth when she blasted a three-run homer.
Madi Lockridge followed with a single and scored on Coffel's triple. Coffel later came home on Cox's single to extend DePauw's lead to 6-0.
Hiram's lone run came in the fifth when Mekaru singled home Haven Papineau who led off the inning with a single.
The Tigers ended the game with the run-rule in the bottom of the sixth when pinch-hitter
Eliza Rammel led off with a homer. Pinch-hitter
Emily DuMais was hit by a pitch and scored on Mathies' double. Mathies then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch.
Mathies had two of DePauw's eight hits, while Marlow and Papineau each had two of Hiram's seven hits.
Alex Romero-Salas improved to 7-3 and Lillie Greene dropped to 5-6.
DePauw can clinch the outright NCAC title with a win over Denison when it hosts the Big Red in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, May 3.
