Granville, Ohio - The DePauw field hockey team fell to second-seed Denison 3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament semifinal game. The Tigers wrap up their season with an overall record of 12-5, while the Big Red improved to 11-6 and hit the road to play Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, November 8.
The game began at a punishing pace with Denison's junior attacker, Emma Gebhart, putting away two goals in the first 10-minutes, recording her 21st goal on the season. Junior Lila Smith advanced on the cage for Denison's insurance goal, giving Big Red a 3-0 lead at 11:46.Â
Freshman forward, Rosie Ondrla, found the back of the cage for the Tigers with nine seconds left in the first quarter. With seconds left on the clock, the Tigers took advantage of a slow defense to weave the ball through defenders. Hailey Nowak knocked the ball towards Ondrla, who knocked the ball from the baseline at a hard angle, deceiving Denison's goalie and slipping past into the far right corner of the cage.Â
Returning from the first, the Tiger's coaching staff switched goalie's giving Tea Jerro the chance to make an impact defensively. Helen Harpenau and Ella Morris locked onto Big Red's biggest offensive weapons, Emma Gebhert and Kathleen Keil, significantly decreasing Denison's opportunities to increase the deficit.Â
Denison edged DePauw in shots 14-10, with the Big Red tallying seven in the first quarter and the Tigers netting the only shot they had in the first quarter. DePauw recorded three shots for the last three quarters, but fell behind in penalty corners, 5-6.Â
Nowak led the Tigers with four shots, one on goal. Ella Morris tallied the Tiger's third shot on goal. Olivia Streifel made five saves in goal for DePauw in the first fifteen minutes.Â
