Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw held a 15-point lead early in the second half, but Elmhurst shot 67.9 percent in the second half and earned a 75-71 win over the Tigers. DePauw dropped to 4-2, while Elmhurst improved to 5-0.
The Bluejays scored the first points of the game, but DePauw scored the next nine and held the lead the rest of the half on the way to a 33-23 halftime lead.
Caleb Washington hit a pair of buckets to push the lead to 38-23 with 18:33 left in the game, but Elmhurst chipped away at the deficit and took its first lead of the half at 54-53 with 8:49 remaining. The Bluejays pushed the lead to six on a couple of occasions and DePauw closed the gap to one a couple of times with the latest coming after
Reph Stevenson's two free throws with 1:54 remaining cut the Elmhurst lead to 68-67.
Vinnie Adjahoungbeta knocked down a three at the 1:14 mark to extend the lead to 71-67.
Sam Jacobs countered with a layup with 54 seconds left to cut the lead to two.Â
The Tigers had only two teams fouls at that point and, after a series of fouls, eventually sent the Bluejays to the line where Jack Cherry hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds remaining. Stevenson's layup with five seconds left cut the lead to 73-71, but Dominic Trelenberg nailed a pair of charity tosses with three seconds remaining to seal the win.
Jacobs led DePauw with 20 points, while Stevenson added 15 and
Brady Kunka 13. Stevenson paced the Tigers with six rebounds while
Joe Smith Jacobs each dished out three assists.
Adjahoungbeta led Elmhurst with 20 points and nine rebounds followed by Aidyn Boone with 11 points. Trelenberg and Luke Smith finished with 10 points each and Smith handed out five assists.
Elmhurst shot 46.4 percent from the field to DePauw's 49.2 percent. Each team had 30 rebounds and the Tigers totaled 10 turnovers to the Bluejays' 12.
DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3, when it opens North Coast Athletic Conference play with a 7 p.m. game at Wabash.Â
