Hot-Shooting Little Giants Top Tigers

Crawfordsville, Ind. - A hot-shooting Wabash team jumped out to a 23-point lead in the first half and held off DePauw in the second half for an 84-65 North Coast Athletic Conference win. The Tigers dropped to 9-10 overall and 5-5 in the NCAC, while the Little Giants improved to 13-6 overall and 9-1 in conference play while extending their win streak to six.

Wabash got off to a torrid start, hitting eight of its first 10 3-pointers in the opening 8:49 to build a 28-11 lead. The Little Giants expanded the margin to as many as 23 at 39-16 after Nate Matelic's layup with 5:12 left in the half. 

The Tigers went on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 17 at 41-24 before Wabash scored three straight to stretch the lead back to 20 with 2:28 remaining. DePauw closed the half with a 7-0 run to trim the halftime deficit to 44-31.

DePauw carried that momentum into the second half with an 11-5 start capped by Stevenson's layup which closed the gap to 49-42.

The Little Giants came right back with six consecutive points to extend the lead to double digits. Wabash pushed the lead to as any as 25 and DePauw got no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Stevenson led DePauw with 22 points, while Washington followed with 14 and a team-high three assists. Stevenson and Brady Kunka each grabbed seven rebounds.

Vinny Buccilla and Gavin Schippert paced Wabash with 20 points apiece with Josh Whack chipping in 16. Schippert led the Little Giants with six rebounds, Randy Kelley handed out eight assists and Noah Hupmann blocked five shots.

DePauw shot 35.7 percent to Wabash's 53.3 percent and the Little Giants knocked in 14-of-32 from beyond the arc with the Tigers hitting only 2-of-17. Each team totaled 35 rebounds and committed five turnovers.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 1, when they host Hiram at 1 p.m.
