Tigers Lose to Saints 1-0 in Home Opener

Box Score

Greencastle, Ind.- In a tightly contested home opener, the DePauw field hockey team fell to Maryville University (Mo.) 1-0. The Tigers moved to 0-3 for the season, while the Saints improved to 1-0.

Throughout the game, Maryville (Mo.) managed to keep the majority of play in the DePauw defensive end, putting up six shots to the Tigers' two in the first quarter. The Saints continued to dominate the offensive end, outshooting the Tigers 8-0 across the remaining three quarters.

Despite having to play on the defensive, DePauw slowed Maryville's attack, giving up just two penalty corners in the second half compared to the six in the first half. After three scoreless quarters with just five minutes left in the game, the Saint's Morgan Angle finished a backhanded shot to find the back of the Tigers' cage. Unfortunately for DePauw, two late penalty corners in the fourth weren't enough to extend the game into overtime.

DePauw's Scarlett Oaks and Lauber split time in goal, with Oaks finishing the evening with four saves in the first half and Lauber finishing with two in the second. Maryville's Jojo Cox tallied one save for the night.

The Tigers travel to Sewanee, Tenn., on Friday, September 13, to take on the Sewanee Tigers at 5 p.m. CDT.
