Greencastle, Ind.- A dominant second half lifted the DePauw women's soccer team past St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in its 5-2 victory over the Pomeroys. The Tigers improved to 5-4-1 for the season, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods dropped to 1-4-2.
Â
Despite its final goal total, the Tigers scored just one goal in the first half in the 21st minute when
Sadie Gibson beat her defender and found teammate
Sophia Patrey in the box to put DePauw up 1-0. Six minutes later, St. Mary-of-the-Woods answered with its own goal following a corner kick attempt to knot the game at one.
In the second half, the Tigers' second goal of the evening came in the 57th minute following another corner attempt. Patrey's corner sailed over the front post defenders and found the head of
Macy Happe to go up 2-1.
Â
DePauw extended its lead by two goals in the 67th minute when
Mia Kubek's cross was quickly settled by
Katharine Lacy and punched into the top right corner of Pomeroy's goal. Unwilling to go away that easily, St. Mary-of-the-Woods cut DePauw's lead to just one following a redirected free kick to put the Pomeroy's back in the game.
Â
Fortunately for DePauw, fresh legs and aggressive pressure on the Pomeroy's backline led to Lacy's back-to-back goals to put the Tigers up 5-2. Lacy's second goal of the evening came from
Jenna Margiotti, who slipped a pass to Lacy, who put in another goal off her left foot. DePauw's final goal by Lacy came a minute later when she broke down her defenders and snuck a goal just past Pomeroy's goalkeeper.
Â
DePauw outshot its opponents 24-6 and held a 14-1 edge in corner kick attempts. In goal for the Tigers
Aubree Empie and
Taylor Beard split time. Empie finished the night with two saves and Beard with one. St. Mary-of-the-Woods' goalkeeper Dree Wilson completed the night with eight saves.
Â
The Tigers host Wilmington College on Saturday, September 24, for senior day at Reavis Stadium. DePauw will celebrate its seniors before the 5:30 p.m. start.
